25th September, Monday... Back to Sydney in the afternoon and didn't really do much, just a bit of shopping. It doesn't make for an exciting entry does it?
26th September, Tuesday... Dave arrived in Sydney to help out with the driving up the coast and everafter this day shall be known as D-day, or not. We prepared a fine welcoming banquet of cereal and tea to eat in our hostel and we were set up for the day. Out we went to the Sydney tower for some views over the whole city which would have been really cool if only Thom and I hadn't flown in over the city the day before and gotten all of the aerial shots we wanted, I think Dave liked it but he was flagging a little after hardly sleeping for his flight out. In the same building is a really bad virtual reality tour of Australia called Oztrek, we went on it but really not worth it, I think it's for kids. Dave seemed to like it. Rather than catch up on sleep we all went out for some nice beers and ciders, lovely.
27th September, Wednesday... A little hungover today (I think
this might become a recurring theme) so we booked up a bridgeclimb and headed out to Bondi beach. It's a very pretty beach but quite busy (school holidays apparantly) and not so warm down in Sydney but plenty of sun although we didn't get to swim. Realising over a hearty meal of McDonalds (McOz has a nice slice of beetroot in it, hmmm) that we had to visit an office to book our campervan that we'd planned to take up the coast we quickly left Bondi with the rather embarrassing thought that we'd spent more time in Maccy D's than on the beach. I might come back here when we revisit Sydney (again).
With all that sorted we wandered out towards the bridge, still not feeling 100%, through the botanical gardens and past the opera house for Dave's benefit and rather too many photos. At the Bridgeclimb we were given a safety talk and stripped of any items that might fall, Thom however did manage to smuggle through his manky Glasto bracelet so he is happy to still be a dirty hippy. After being breathalysed we went out on to the bridge, you're attached to a line the whole
way around and can't overtake, or run around or jump to your doom, thinking about this Thom promptly headed to the front where he hoped to seduce our guide. I was stuck behind Dave with the less pleasant view of Dave's behind. The view from the Bridge was very excellent, having decided to do the night climb after already seeing the city from the air and tower during the day, we saw the end of the sunset and all of the lights around the harbour. Must remember to upload some photos...
Food, beer and an ice bar followed. It was pretty cool, everything there was made of ice including the cups and seats. Apparantly you can only stay there for 30 mins before you die (or something like that) but that was enough as the drinks all had a slightly odd taste to them and I was rather chilly. Worth doing but I doubt I'd go back.
28th September, Thursday... Our first day in the camper and Thom and Dave set about the odd task of deciding on a name, Kylie seemed to be the main contender for quite a while. After finally escaping Kings Cross with all of it's one way streets and no-left/right turn side roads we got out of the city on a slow road heading for the Blue Mountains to check out what turned out to be some very impressive views of the cliffs and the valleys. First up was Wentworth Falls where we were treated to our first view over the valley (or is it a canyon, what's the difference?) and of a waterfall which was a little far away from our viewpoint but still quite impressive. I like waterfalls. Next, Katoomba for views of the Three Sisters rock stumps (or are they stacks?), from Echo Point, which supposedly resemble three sisters though I'm not so sure but sure are beautiful. A short walk along the cliffside and we were at another waterfall. I do like waterfalls. Back to Echo point for the same view at sunset and we were free to hit the road.
In the evening we had our first meal in the camper, sandwiches made from service station bread and chicken... mmm classy. No need to dirty the plates or stoves just yet and the fact we didn't find a supermaket yet didn't help. Still, it gave Thom the energy needed to drive to Newcastle (who named these places?). A slight problem may have emerged today, it seems Dave hasn't driven for 2 years and his command of the camper (now christened Apollo Creed) leaves a little to be desired.
