It's New Years Day and the boys are putting on a bbq. The boys are Joseph and George who are brothers and Colin who took us on the bike ride. They have invited the girls, Melissa Emily and Kayleigh and the visiting parents, Martin, me and Emily's Mum and Nan Michelle and Maureen. The bbq isn't until the afternoon and Melissa had planned a walk from Bondi beach to Coogee beach where the boys live. It is just too hot though and we faff about so much that the opportunity is missed and we need to leave for the bbq. I can't go home and say that I have been to Sydney and not been to Bondi Beach and so we arrange a quick pit stop just to see it. Melissa shows us where the coastal walk starts and I regret not getting my act together earlier - even the heat seems more bearable because of the ocean breeze. We step on the sand, take a few photos and make our way over to Coogee.
The boys Duplex apartment is fantastic, an upside apartment with the bedrooms on the ground floor. The open-plan kitchen / dining and sitting room opens
up to a great balcony bigger than some modern day gardens. I thought we were the last to arrive and notice everyone is already settled on the outside sofas/hammocks and egg chair enjoying the sun. The dining table has been brought outside to add to the outside table and the table is set for us all to eat. George is in charge of the bbq and Joseph has made all the salads. The girls help Colin with serving the drinks and this all feels like a well honed restaurant. Then Tom arrive who turns out to be the entertainment, larger than life with muscles to challenge Popeye. Let's say his views on life and views on others are brutal - Kayleigh should be called Snow White because she is pale and probably on Coke he says (she isn't, she is a blond version of the real Snow White with a heart full of love). He continues, Emily is a slapper (she isn't she is just pretty and full of fun). As for Melissa, well I'll have to think about that one he falters. Yeah, no matter how many muscles he may of had, he at least had the common sense
to realise that he standing next to her father but he is funny and he keeps us laughing.
After a few drinks, I try a question to engage everyone. 'Where do you think you will be in a years time I ask.
Maureen (Nan) - I will be with Emily but I don't think that will be in Australia, I am not sure where it will be but predict it won't be here. Maureen also predicts Emily will get married in 2017.
Michelle (Mum) I will be with a new man and a new job.
George - hoping he might be lucky tonight says that he will be with a 3 month old baby.
Joseph - says he will be looking after said baby..
Tom - Miami
Colin - I will be with Yvetta - a girl he is chasing and who hopefully will have by then opened her Xmas present - an in joke.
Kayleigh - I will have my Australian permanent residency.
Emily - I will be in New York working.
Melissa - I will be in the UK ...? she replies rather cryptically.
Martin and Me
- we will be with each other we say rather predictably.
This is the shortened version and was quite fun so continue the game and ask, what are the qualities that you look for in a partner?
Maureen - someone who is not afraid to speak their mind, funny and tall. Emily confirmed that is pretty much an accurate description of her grandad who died 3 years ago.
Michelle - some tall, sincere, fun, loyal, outgoing.
George - someone like my Mum.
Joseph - agree someone like my Mum who is strong in character and respects my Dad.
Colin - simply a non-smoker.
Tom - said he wanted a good f..K , no come on be serious I prompt, oh ok he says a really good f..k. I want someone who is not jealous and open minded and I don't need to ask any more.
Kayleigh - someone who loves me.
Emily - someone who is career driven, strong personality that makes me laugh and can keep me on my toes.Melissa - someone who can make me laugh and is cool.
The talk turns to dancing and Emily and Tom
want to show us their take on the famous scene from Fame where the lead guy lifts the girl over his head. Melissa joins in and Martin still ready to compete with Tom gets up to show that he still has it in him. It is hilarious and I remember there was a time when he really could lift me above his head, sadly the intervening years, muscles and weight all contribute to at best substituting me for Melissa.
It's been a really fun New Years Day, we thank them all and say our goodbyes. We leave for Noosa tomorrow.
