To start 2014 off with another memorable moment, Brad had booked for the two of us to walk over the bridge at sunset on the 2nd January. He definitely did well with everything he booked before we left England, definitely a lucky girl :-). The bridge climb wasn't until sunset so in the day we all got the boat over to Manly to visit family friends of Margaret and Keith. Ron and Lynn were in Australia visiting their son, Tyrone who is living there with his wife Justine and their daughter. We headed over in the morning and all had lunch together, it was so lovely to meet them, getting a bit of insight into their life in Sydney and getting some information and tips as Tyrone and Justine had been travelling like us years before and ended up back in Australia. Because we had the climb we couldn't really drink as they breathalise everyone before they start! We all headed to the beach after lunch though and went for a swim and a sunbathe, the sea was sooo cold but we all got in and had a laugh together! We didn't get to lay out much though as it started
to rain so we all ran for shelter to a bar along the beach front. Me and brad couldn't stay long as we needed to be back for the climb so we left everyone at the bar together and headed back to the city. It was a great day though and lovely to meet everyone! We will definitely meet up with Tyrone and Justine once back in Sydney.
Once back in the city we went to the apartment got changed and headed to the bridge to do the climb!!! I was so excited, the weather was a bit windy but just the thought of climbing the bridge was good enough for me! In the reception there are pictures up of all the famous people who have climbed including the royals, actors, sportsmen, singers it was good to see all the people who had completed it. They give you a time of three hours for the climb but that includes getting your suit to do the walk in and being shown and fitted with all the equipment. There was about 12 people in each group and you all have to introduce yourself to each other before heading off. Once in
our suits we got shown all our equipment by our leader Amy. We were strapped up with our clips that you use to attach to railings along the bridge, we had earphones to hear Amy talk to us, head lights because we were going to be climbing once it got dark, waterproof jackets and headscarfs. Once we were shown everything and did a practice walk attaching the clips we were set to go! I had been so excited I hadn't let myself get nervous but once out there walking the nerves kicked in and looking down underneath my feet seeing the road and sea was a bit scary!! All nerves disappeared though once we started seeing the views, it was breath taking! The first main view was over looking the Opera House seeing all the ferries coming in from all locations, I felt so lucky to be there at that point it was amazing to be experiencing it. Amy told us stories about the build of the bridge along the way and gave us lots of little facts. She also took pictures of us as you weren't allowed to take your own camera or pictures for safety. It got pretty
cold as we went up so waterproofs came out to keep us warm and dry as it started to drizzle a little bit too. Once at the top of the bridge it was amazing!!!! It was just beautiful and was perfect to be sharing it with Brad I can honestly say it was the best start to our new year together!! We didn't get down till gone 10pm so headed straight back to the apartment android the others all about it. Kerry and Keith were doing the sunrise climb so everyone had an early night after a long but memorable day!
The next day was our last day in Sydney. Me and Brad spent the morning sorting out transport for the next part of the trip as we were all driving up along the east coast up to Brisbane. We wanted to get a campervan but there weren't any available on shirt notice so we got a car as well as Kerry Dave Margaret and Keith having one as well. After finally getting a car sorted we headed out to the zoo! We got the tickets when we bought the aquarium ones so didn't want to waste them. The
others went on an open top bus and ended up at Watsons Bay so we headed over and met them in the afternoon. It was so nice over there, the bars were really nice overlooking the river and you could even see the bridge in the distance. We went to Doyle's restaurant for dinner which was delicious!!! Me, Dave and Margaret shared an yummy paella but the dish of the day had to be the mussels which brad and Kerry got, I think we all could safely say they were the best we'd ever had!! So yes, me and Brad are definitely going back once we are back in Sydney in April!! We all got taxis back to the apartment boys and girls separately. Us girls got back first and unfortunately the power had cut out again!! This was actually the third time as it happened the morning Kerry and Keith did the bridge climb so we weren't too happy! It was eventually turned back on again!!! The next day we were all up and out early and headed to our first destination along our route which was Hunter Valley.... I'll tell you all on my next entry!
Sydney
you were unreal. I will never forget my first visit there and am already excited to be back in April!
Love B&K xxxxxx
