It's been a hot summer... severe drought in Eastern Australia...record temperatures preventing us venturing West to support drought-torn economies...air-con humming constantly...violent hail and lightning storms flooding occasional relief. Gotta admit I did not know the names of 99% of the bugs without the assistance of Dr Google...but the good Dr also helped me appreciate that there are some out there who make my perception of my obsessions as somewhat low key, which is nice! I therefore dwell on the fun of discovery...and the discovery of the not usual has always been a driving force. If we have any similarities with the Yeti, I feel that is one. Thanks for commenting.

Denise found our place many years ago as a simple fibro cottage with amazing bush views that we made our home. While Sydney sprawls and congests around us we never tire of our Aussie backyard that changes in many ways every day. It is full of life if one takes the time to look for it. How lucky we are to live there.

Dave, what you need to invest in is a scanning electron microscope... These beasties are less than 1mm in length. I love their armature and sense organs (sensilla). Think we're ok with copyright here as the plate is from an old publication of my own.. [photo=10007960]

Hi David, don't know how I got that erroneous number... It was only a silly thing: but liking macro-photography, electron microscopy always blows my mind.... These pics are of the larval stage of a fish parasite and the scale bar is in micrometers. I'll try the photo again [photo=10037960]

Your Electron Microscopy photo is fantastic Andy. Really impressed with the clarity and depth of field. I guess I'd have to capture bugs to use such technology. Kinda different to my sweat in the eyes, getting real close, hoping to get a macro focus before the critter does not fly away!

Great blog! I am a huge fan of the small details of the macro world. This fairy tale that happens beneath our feet is beautiful, complex and vital to all life on this planet. I love when people smell flowers - they are smelling the genitals. Insects are like flying penises, flying from vagina to vagina. I spend weeks crawling on the tundra, digging in the dirt and absorbing the intricacies of the blooms and bugs. You are blessed in your back yard to have such diversity - the view from your deck fantastic. You must've spent a decent amount of time on Dr Google. I am interested in the two unnamed flowers on Page 4. The white ones look like a type of Stellaria and the yellow like a Senacio, I don't know if these genera sprawl into your continent though. Amazing pics. Dave

Interesting take Dave...my macro sects you relate to flowers! Talk about full circle. This sect thing all began waiting for a flower to bloom so I appreciate the analogy! The white flowers on page 4 are Australian flannel flowers and the yellow flower is a dandelion closing at dusk...both meals for grasshoppers. You crawling in the tundra would be quite a sight...be fascinated to see what you have found. Of the about 1,200 Dr Google estimate of species of Australian native bees I have found 5 in my Aussie backyard. I'll leave it to others to put in the hours to find the others! Glad you liked the pics...I'm pretty chuffed with the results and I've only shown about half of the critters I found. The best thing is every day I found new ones.

Glad you checked it out, Ake. The challenge is getting critters in focus but when achieved the results speak for themselves. The Red Baron Dragonfly pic you highlight is a great example. What an alien head it has. Should star in a movie. Sensational.
