Friday 31st December 2010 Spending most of the day scoping out places to watch the Fireworks, we decided against trying for the botanical gardens and waiting the whole day in the heat and crowds (especially as it’s an alcohol free zone!). A lot of the small beaches near Vaucluse that used to be free to the public have been restricted and are now ticket only - funnily enough, arriving on the 30th they were sold out! We found a great spot near to Rose Bay Girls School with a panoramic view of the bridge and harbour. Only two people were there, although it was only 11am at this point and there were enough picnic tables and chairs saving places to take up most of the front. Marvin picked me up at my hostel, and we drove from Glebe to the Eastern Suburbs, where he and his wife Linda live. They live in an area called Dover Heights which is really gorgeous, and right near Bondi Beach. He told me all about the city as we were driving through, and it was really fun to see the city from a different perspective... with a Canadian accent no less! I learned that Marvin has lived in Australia for more than forty years, and has lived in Sydney for about fifteen. We got to his beautiful home where I met his wife Linda. She is Australian and really nice, and was a very hospitable host despite being in the recovery process from knee surgery.
