What a couple of days I've had in Sydney! Friday I went walking downtown to see all of the touristy things, namely the Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge. It rained most of the day, making both walking and photography not very ideal. Two pleasant surprises that I stumbled upon were St. Mary's Cathedral and The Royal Botanic Gardens. St. Mary's Cathedral is the largest cathedral in Australia; it honestly looks like it was transplanted from Europe. No photographs were allowed inside, but it was still definitely worth the trip inside. On the buttresses outside I saw a sulphur-crested cockatoo, one of many exotic birds flying around the city. Royal Botanic Gardens are basically a huge park with hundreds of varieties of trees and plants. Hundreds of birds flocked here, but only a few people. The ... read more

AustraliaMalachy Burke© So in the absence of being able to Skype young Mr. Lynch asked me to write an essay on my experiences so far in Australia and being that I am on a cattle station 200 kilometres from anywhere I figure I have nothing better to do on my day off. Here goes.. So it all started on the 9th of November 2010 as I boarded a plane in Dublin which would take me to that far off place down under they call Oz. 27 hours in a tin can later and I landed in Sydney International Airport, tired, excited and still trying to figure out how the toilets in Abu Dhabi Airport could smell that bad. Upon arriving at Steve’s house and meeting his housemates ( All Irish of course) I crashed out and ... read more

Well Sydney.... Im struggling to remember that far back! It has been a while since I updated this! I went for beers with Andy first night, second night, third night, ok every night I was in Sydney.... During the day I visited the Botanic Gardens (beautiful!) and the opera house which was pretty ugly up close and not white like you think.... I also went to the aquarium which was fantastic, seeing all the sharks and clownfish and angelfish and jellyfish and well fish!!! oh and getting the fitt camera blokes number for hayley to go for fish and chips with! Although there was one major downside to this little venture.... I ran out of memory space on my camera... Hayley came to the rescue by lending me hers, but then when I went to the ... read more

It has been pretty non-stop since Becky last wrote after our strange Christmas day on the beach. We spent Boxing Day at Circular Quay taking a look at the Opera House and walking across the Harbour Bridge. Both are just as impressive as they look in pictures and by the end of the day we were suitably tired and our cameras full of snaps (which will be added soon...). The following day we did a little shopping and hopped on a ferry to Manly beach and Shelly Bay, both lovely and the latter very shelly. Then it was off to Melbourne on the over-night Greyhound bus, arriving just in time to check-in to our hostel (named the Oslo HOTEL - deceiving) and nip down to the MCG on a tram to watch some cricket action between ... read more

It’s now official; I’m chubby. Apparently my metabolism isn’t what it used to be when I was 22. It turns out eating like a horse in combination with zero exercise actually does store fat in my physical depots these days, and it’s not very becoming when you’re of naturally lean structure. The plan to swim every day worked for about five days. During my first week at the coffee shop I started work at 9AM, and therefore had time to go to the pool before the workday began, a routine with only one minor drawback; for the first hour I looked like a raccoon from the un-fashionable imprints the swim goggles left. Another possible disadvantage would be that it’s a 20-25 minute walk to the pool, and walking really isn’t all that great for my shin ... read more

Somehow I must’ve bathed Buddha the wrong way the other week, for he did not pay much attention to my wishes of a good, healthy body. I might actually have poured water at him so inadequately that I managed to piss him off, a scenario I deem possible only because my body started deteriorating the very day after I attended his birthday party in Darling Harbor. Or is this payback for me calling him fat in my last entry? Right leg: shin splint, left leg; hurting knee. These are aches I immediately ascribed to my old, worn out shoes. Hooray! I thought, I get to spend money I don’t really have on something I desperately need. I started doing some research online for Sydney’s cheapest sports outlet, and found one a bit outside of the city. ... read more

When new to a country, one of the many surprises of daily life is the unexpected holidays. For a working girl like myself, these translate to days off, and are therefore greeted with enthusiasm. Monday of last week I learned that we wouldn’t be working that Friday, since it was Anzac Day. I had heard "Anzac" mentioned in a variety of situations; Anzac Biscuit, Anzac Parade, Anzac Bridge etc. Now it was here, the actual holiday, and I learned all about the alliance between Australia and New Zealand, as well as the story of Gallipoli and how they planned to capture Istanbul. To immerse myself properly in the Aussie culture, I joined Dave in his efforts to help celebrate the 93rd anniversary of this military failure by betting money on either the heads or tails of ... read more

Thursday night I was suppose to meet up for coffee with Jay - the guy whom I met as I was grabbing some free postcards the other day - but I ended up going to see about a room in Redfern instead. Jay, being of a kind disposition, understood my priority, and we rescheduled to Friday night. So off I went on my bike into the Sydney night, nearly getting killed more than once by rabid and reckless car drivers, despite my lights both front and back. I miraculously managed to arrive somewhat unscathed to the address given, but it really is only a matter of time before I get hit, and I’m not looking forward to it. I hear metal can be rather uncomfortable to bump into at high speed. I rang the door of ... read more
