I don’t think we’ll ever learn.
Neither of us have any idea when we got back to the hotel on Saturday night - actually, I do recall being chucked out of the bar at drinking up time, but have a feeling we didn’t go straight home.
I also seem to recall Claire being extremely upset (and actually quite emotional) when she realised that McDonalds had closed at 3am - was quite disturbing really.
Anyway - I dragged myself out of bed at about 10am, crawled over to the room door, put the do not disturb thing up on it and crawled back to bed. It was about lunch time when we finally woke up to Claire’s mobile phone ringing. As it turns out, she had missed about nine missed calls from Leanda who was having her housewarming party. Claire managed to call them at about 2am UK time - I wonder how many of the party goers can remember the phone call?? It was nice to learn that Claire wasn’t forgotten about anyway as they had a toast to her in her absence!
I was seriously suffering by this point and needed food - got out the
The Statendam
Would put anyone in the mood for a cruise! hotel and realised we had missed half of the hottest, sunniest day so far since arriving in Oz - what a waste (ach, not really - the night out was worth it).
I decided to get the train down to the harbour where the biggest ship I’ve ever seen in my life had just docked up - quite spectacular really. With the weather and the views at the harbour, I soon forgot about my hangover and had a walk round “the Rocks” area of Sydney which, as far as we found, was by far the nicest bit.
There was quite a cool band playing in a court yard, right outside a Japanese restaurant - perfect opportunity to grab a bento box, Asahi and catch some rays - the perfect hangover cure!
Claire caught up with me and we took a walk across the harbour bridge and up to the observation tower - I have no idea how many pictures Claire has we have of the bridge and opera house, I may actually count them the next time I can’t get to sleep.
That said - the view from up the tower on such a nice day
was really quite something. Looking at the opera house there was no doubt that we really were in Oz!
We continued across the bridge to Kirribilli - it must have been in the mid 30’s by this point. I had no idea how awesome the view of the city skyline, bridge and opera house would be from over there and was well glad that we had bothered to actually come down off the bridge and grab a drink (despite seeing a massive cockroach in the grocers shop!).
Claire was in heaven as there were two separate wedding parties having their pictures taken by the water at Kirribilli. I think no matter where we end up getting married, Claire will want to dress up again and get some snaps taken down there! I have to admit, it did look quite cool!
Sydney’s very own Luna park is also over that side of the water. Melbourne also has one down in St Kilda which we are yet to visit and, after going to Sydney’s, I doubt we ever will visit. It’s like an even cheaper version of M&Ds - and features great thrill rides like the “sticky wall” and
Claire under the bridge
At the Kirribilli side (considering the best angle for wedding pictures!) “throw the ball into the mouth of the rotating clown”. Loads of fun and would seriously make you think twice about going to Florida!
We took another cruise on the river - this was a slightly cheaper one though by public ferry and staying on the public ferry for longer than we perhaps should have done!
We got off the ferry just in time to watch the cruise ship set sail. The sight of watching it leave Sydney was a bit much for Claire who actually started crying as it sounded its horn - it’s amazing what a hangover can do to you!
After spending at least two hours trying to decide where to have dinner, we had possibly the worst meal either of us had ever had - but the wine was good and we got a refund for it too!
Despite the residual hangovers from the night before, we felt obliged to have a final night out in Sydney. We jumped into a taxi (Sydney taxi’s are outstanding compared to Melbourne) and asked the driver to take us to his favorite bar in the area of our hotel. He was only to happy to
Aussie One!
Out yacht from Friday night passed by assist and dropped us at Scruffy Murphy’s (which I believe is actually a 24 hour bar!), just in time for the live band starting at 11pm. The band started with an Aussie song neither of us knew - but from then on were awesome!
It’s probably just as well the camera ran out of batteries.
