During the week between Christmas and New Year, we decided to have some relaxation time, although we still managed to get a few things done. On Boxing Day, we headed into town and hit the cinema to see the film P.S. I Love You, a chick flick title if ever I had heard one. It was more of a film for Emma, having been a fan of the book on which it was based. It wasn't really my type of film but I thought Gerard Butler's attempt at an Irish accent was pretty funny. Emma really enjoyed it. Afterwards, we decided to treat ourselves and have dinner at Tony Romas which was tasty. One of the days, Emma also went into town to meet Ann Marie, a teacher at the school she had taught at in ... read more

So we decided, along with everyone else, that we would spend New Year's Eve in Sydney Harbour! Along with thousands of others (mainly travelers), we spent the day queuing and then sitting in the sweltering heat waiting for one of the best fireworks displays we've ever seen. We decided to go for a point in the Harbour where we'd been before and had one of the best views of the Opera House and the Bridge - Mrs Macquarie’s Point. Unfortunately so did 22,000 other people and even though we got there at around 11am (13 hours before the main event!) this clearly wasn't early enough! We stupidly thought that we wouldn't have to queue for too long and that we'd still be able get an unobstructed view - but how wrong could you be! After queuing ... read more

Ok, so these are some of the pic that I took on NYE. People starting queuing up in early in the morning to get the best spots to watch the fireworks. I know people in the hostel that left at 8 am to go to a bar across the Harbour and they were going to wait and sit there all day. The most coveted spot in the city is the botanical gardens where you can see the opera house, bridge and the whole Harbour. But people started comping out the night before just to be let into the gardens. The Harbour area was just madness that day. I resigned myself not to have the best seat in the house because I refused to waist a whole day for the half an hour fireworks show. So I ... read more

Well I have been very excited about this backstage tour of the Opera House for my whole trip Not only had I been fortunate enough to have enjoyed the tour from the inside, with Annette, but now I was actually going to get to see behind the scenes too! The early morning started off a bit eventfully as I could not actually get into the building where I was expecting to gain entry! It was nearing the 7am meeting time and it was important to be on time, fortunately a secruity guard took pity on me and pointed me to the Stage Door where the other five visitors were waiting We were each given a security badge to wear for our trip and Adam our guide introduced himself It was not possible to take pictures in ... read more

We were woken by early morning phone call (at 10.30am) to ask when the hotel could expect us to check out! Our flight “home” wasn’t until about 8pm, so we had the best part of the day to kill. We didn’t really do much to be honest - some breakfast, some lunch and a walk round the shops. I found the building in the picture the day before and dragged Claire back down to the Rocks to show her it - I wonder how many other Clelanders have had their picture taken outside this building! We actually managed to have an alcohol free day, and were doing really well until we got checked into the airport and the flight was a bit late - giving us the best part of an hour to kill. Even at ... read more

My fourth envelope contained details of our next adventure in Sydney, but unfortunately just as I opened the envelope someone called Ricky on his mobile to inform him that it was cancelled due to the rain. Ricky had booked for us to do a tour of the BLUE MOUNTAINS!! We would kayak through the gorges and visit famous caves, where we would have had lunch and soaked up the best views in Sydney!! I was so looking forward to it, as Ricky was too, but the rain continued later that the day and also through the next morning. As it was wet and it trip was cancelled, we decided to visit the Sydney Tower where you pay $50 each for a buffet lunch at the highest restaurant in Sydney. The restaurant revolves, so you literally get ... read more
