Up early enough to get train from kings cross to town hall and then on to Milson's Point. From there view of the harbour and my first glance at one of the most famous and beloved buildings on earth, the Sydney Opera House. Spent a bit of time wandering around the Lunar Park which had a real old-time, authentic fun-fare feel with quaint old style paintings and a load of weird and wonderful rides and fun things for kids. Sydney Harbour Bridge. Walked across Sydney harbour bridge. As I expected the view was spectacular and the opera house looks perfect from every angle. I explored the harbour area and walked up to and around the Opera House, making sure to get a good stroke along the shape of the roof and a fondle of the famous ... read more

Arrived in Sydney! 30 degrees on a lovely sunny sunday!! After Hobart we went to the Penal Centre at Port Arthur, all very nice but just like visiting a National Trust site, and a strange day for a cruise visit, however, had a nice walk and enjoyed the scenery, however on leaving the Captain took us via Cape Raoul and that was awesome!!! Up early at around 7.00 am the day of the Bridge Climb, and I am like a "coiled spring" raring to go. We touch base with our friends in Aberdeen via Skype. At around 07:30 I set off for the bridge climb and arranged to meet Di at the swimming pool at around 11:00am. I arrived early at the Bridge Climb office, and have some time to kill. My climb will be the first of the day and I am on the "Express climb" which just goes for it without too many stops. Very soon we are called through, first we sign the disclaimer and are breathalised. Next we move to another room where we collect our trendy jumpsuits and introduce ourselves to our fellow climbers (On my climb there were two Americans, Two Bermudans, two ... read more

First full day in Sydney - We decided to take the Sydney Explorer, which is a double decker open topped bus. The bus is hop-on/hop-off and with its 25 stops takes you all round the city visiting all the major sites. This was a good decision as we saw all of the city without too much walking being involved. Sydney is by far the biggest city that we have visited, so exploring it all on foot was not really a possibility We got off the bus at Darling harbour to visit the Sydney Aquarium, this was quite enjoyable and a lot less crowded than the one that we had previously visited in Singapore. We were also able to buy Aquarium tickets on the bus which meant that we were able to skip the queue. By the ... read more

We took a taxi to our posh hotel called the Marriot, we were on the 25th floor (again). We had a great view of the harbour. We took a ferry to Taronga Zoo where we saw cassowaries, kangaroos and a baby elephant (and more). We caught another ferry to Manly Beach and watched the surfers there, they were very cool. We swam but had to be careful of the blue bottle jellyfish. We caught another ferry back again (they use them like buses) and had a great view of the Harbour Bridge and the Opera House from the water. ... read more

09 04 2010 Ok readers, so we have got to Sydney and it is our first full day. What a great place with loads to see and boat trips to go everywhere with stunning views. We realised there was loads more to see in Sydney itself. Wendy had unfinished business in Myers and I needed a hair cut. As a result we got to the city centre about 1100 and split up. Wendy never got out of Myers initially and had a shopping fix to satisfy. I got a buzz cut for $10 which wasn’t bad for the middle of a city. We did team up after a while and then got immersed in Sydney central plaza and the Queen Victoria building. Never knew there were so many shops, which together could lead women to shopping ... read more

G'day mate! alors New Year's Eve en Australie...

As you can no doubt tell, we decided to spend New Years eve on Sydney harbour and watch the fire works. We watched them from Mrs Macquaries chair which has a perfect view of the opera house and the bridge, on a normal day at least, as for new years eve the place was packed so the view wasn't quite 'perfect', but it was good all the same. Most of the vantage points around the harbour, including Mrs Macquaries chair, were well organised and stewarded by the local council who had set up barriers and various entry restrictions, one such restriction was that we couldn't take our own alcohol in with us but we're far too rebelious (ha) to abide a rule like that so we took Larry's advice and filled a 2litre 'apple juice' bottle ... read more
