Today is our last full day in Sydney. We started it by doing laundry which was very much needed. Then we grabbed some breakfast at the hotel and headed out to see more sites of Sydney, since there was some blue sky showing. We headed down to Circular Quay, between the Opera House and the Bridge and figured out the best way to Bondi Beach and Watson’s Bay. We took a bus to Bondi Beach, which is a must see in every guide book. But as we predicted, we were underwhelmed. It is about a quarter mile long beach with some shops and restaurants across the street. The waves were rolling so there were a number of surfers out which is impressive as it is still pretty cold out. The high today was in the low ... read more

Well hello people, where ever on this fabulous planet you may be. If you didn’t know already I have a space to call my own. Didn’t buy rather renting with my delightful sister Louise and her wonderful boyfriend Michael. Our place is a cheeky three bedroom apartment with a balcony and kitchen with views of the Pacific Ocean and a lazy 3 min walk to the sands of Bronte Beach. Not to mention spectacular views of Bronte Valley if you don’t mind. Been a surprisingly tough transition back to the land of Oz from the good old USA but the dust is starting to settle with some of the little and slightly larger blocks beginning to fall into place. I have an outdoor football team, an indoor football team, friends playing in football teams who I ... read more

This is a story of a girl on her way to Australia to live and work for the better part of a year. She had booked her flight four months in advance (and got a really good deal, too!) She had a place to stay and someone to meet her at the airport in Sydney. She had made her way to LA to catch her flight and was waiting for the shuttle bus to pick her up when she decided to check her email one last time. There was an email waiting for her: Your flight to Sydney has been cancelled. If this is an error please call expedia. !?!?!? What! How can the flight be cancelled at the last minute? Now what? I am going switch to first person to say that I was pretty ... read more

Yes, I am still around! Just enjoying Sydney too much to spend much time on the computer. We have been here now about three weeks, and every day has been amazing. Sydney truly lives up to its reputation as a vibrant and dynamic city. Every time I cross - or even catch a glimpse of - the Sydney Harbour Bridge, I get a buzz. It is such an iconic world-famous view that I find it exciting every time I see it (imagine how I am going to be when we reach Uluru!) I have yet to walk to the top of it (the boys and I resisted the urge, and decided to wait until Paul returned to do it together) but we have driven across it many times (usually inadvertently as I still don’t always read ... read more

I can’t believe we have arrived in Sydney, and that tomorrow Paul flies back to Joburg for a couple of weeks! That means it is now nearly five months that we have been on the road, yet it feels just like yesterday we were back in Joburg planning the trip to this point. It is going to feel strange, the next 10 days or so, not being in a caravan, and not having Paul with us. My mother will be joining us for a few days next week from Perth, and then the boys and I will set up to explore Sydney in earnest. Paul’s oldest friend Mark Sandham and his wife Anna have kindly offered to share their home with the Marketos troop for the next five weeks or so, and even better, they live ... read more

Hi everyone we're back from Bondi! We got the bus to Bondi and took about a hundred photos! :-) We first of all made our way along the promenade part and towards the lifeguard tower and found a spot not too far away to keep an eye on the action. It wasnt long before the lifeguards were coming out 1 by 1 and we witnessed 2 rescues while we were there and a 3rd as we were leaving. I watch the program so I am afraid to say I know most of their names and we watched Caillan do a rescue and then Brad and Kerr Box. On the 3rd rescue Terry then went in. Im not sure who else was hidden in the tower but I was happy with seeing Caillan (!!) and getting the ... read more

Happy St. Paddy’s day!!! This morning we decided to head over to Paddy’s Market which is a big market in Central Sydney. We hopped on the train and switched trains at Town hall. We found our way to the market which is in the heart of Chinatown. The first thing we see when we walk in is hockey jerseys! Ice hockey for all you non-canadians haha. They were so cheap but good quality. $45 for an Iginla jersey!!!! I already have 3 flames jerseys so I didn’t need another one and no room in my backpack! Dad however found a dodgers jersey for $15 so he was really excited and bought one to wear down in Arizona when he goes to ball games. Most of the stalls were similiar or the same selling everything from ipod ... read more

Bondi beach. Planned to get to Bondi and walk the apparently impressive coastal walk to Coogee first, get the bus back to Bondi and then maybe a bit of surf but when I got off the bus at Bondi and set my eyes on the perfect, clean little waves rolling into the long golden beach my agenda for the day changed. I stood for a bit watching some surfers ride a few waves and asked a genuinely stereotypical looking blond, tanned surfer dude where I could hire a board for the day. He told me the spot and I made a bee-line along the length of the beach to rent out a board. The guy in the shop was a decent fella and only charged me for 2 hours but said I could have the board ... read more

Monday 28th Today we went rock climbing at an indoor climbing gym called Clip and Climb they had over 3 routes to climb most being on artificial rock but the other part was a all unique routes. They had a racing wall, a pitch-black cave lit up by black lights, a ladder wall, and tons of other variations. Kim and I both hold the record for the speed wall against our group. She holds the womans title with a time 12.2 and I hold the guys at 6.7 seconds. After our group went climbing we just hung out the rest of the day. Dave, Parker and my self went to see if we could get some money off for the mountain biking. We spoke with the owner and got him to knock off some of the ... read more

... read more
