It is so easy to miss some very import places to visit. Shellharbour is one of those places. Shellharbour Village is the old seaside settlement with descendants of the original migrants still living in the area. We met one lady at the Visitors Information Centre, and the family has the history of ariving here on sailing ships, coming ashore, marrying (almost instantly) and raising their families. Tough times built a rough and tumble society including home stills providing whisky (??) to the original inhabitants. So, besides the history of the village, there are three more important historical sites, the wreck of a ship, a light rail museum and of interest to David and myself, HARS. This museum restores all sorts of aircraft, mostly military, both for display and flying to various airshows on the East Coast. ... read more

Today was goodbye to family and heading south to parts of Australia we have never visited before. The journey had its challenges - like driving across Sydney without using toll roads. WE DID IT! The first odd thing that happened was congestion getting onto the Newcastle Sydney freeway. We found the reason, an articulated truck was struggling to move as one axle of the trailer had its brakes jammed on or bearings ceased. Smoke was coming off the tyres which were being dragged down the road with great reluctance. The noise and smell had to be witnessed! The drive south then ran smoothley - in fact quite a pleasant drive to Sydney. The road is cut through some amazing rock faces in quite rugged country. We turned off pacific highway onto Ryde Road and then let ... read more

What is it they say? The first step is admitting you have a problem?! Well not sure we actually had a problem persay.... but we did realise that maybe for the last while (couple years even) we have probably been in denial.... Denial that our 1984 caravan was almost 30 years old (is it really??!)... Denial that that we were looking a little white trashy (especially now that we had a new truck)... Denial that perhaps 14ft isn't quite enough space (especially when we seem to be coming and going with luggage all the time lately from one job to the next) So perhaps it was time to move on? It all started with some rain, a few leaks (well sometimes more than a few...), our bags being everywhere since we were leaving again in a ... read more

City meets country. Literally. Enforced rest. Quiet contemplation as I sit gently swaying in my Peruvian hammock, a keepsake from a former adventure, under the gum trees. Deserved rest I should say. Yesterday, a walk down quiet Mystics Beach reaching the estuary of the Minnamurra river where a very rabble of people met our view, swimming, boating and playing. This morning an early morning stroll to the 'world-famous' surfing beach, The Farm. This is Killalea State Park nestled on a peninsula between Minnamurra and Shellharbour. A strangely ordered and manicured campsite encroached on one side by the sprawling McMansion estate of Shell Cove. An environmental disaster of monolithic proportions. Look South, look South out to the ….range circling Kiama. It is not hard to see the volcanic crater that this must have been long before you ... read more

At the beginning of our 29th week we headed for Point Plommer. So did the rain. We camped in the Limeburners Creek Nature Reserve right by the beach. It was a great spot but the weather put a dampener on it – literally. After 2 days of wet weather and both PB and I battling a cold, we decided to move onto Port Macquarie. We managed to get a good look around the town with some sunshine before the rain caught up with us again. The boys had lots of fun riding out along the breakwater wall and at the playground, PB even managed to get a surf. We continued south to Seal Rocks and enjoyed a few beautiful sunny days. We were a bit hesitant to swim at the main beach due to the number ... read more

We arrived back into Sydney on a sunny Sunday morning and took a taxi to our friends Victor and Brynnin's house in Maroubra, where we had kept our truck while we were away. We caught up with them for a bit, took a drive by the beach in Maroubra for a little look at the surf, and then made our way back down to Wollongong where we had our caravan in storage. We picked it up and everything was fine and not as dusty as the last time we stored it which was good. We made our way to the caravan park in Shellharbour and Brett set up and I went and got groceries; we even both remembered which side of the road to drive on. Brett only hit the windshield wipers instead of the turn ... read more

Well we stayed such a long time in Shellharbour that I was beginning to feel like we’d been sucked into a black hole and we’d never get out! It rained, and rained, and then rained some more. Apparently the area hasn’t seen this much rain in February for quite a lot of years (and it’s only mid Feb!). Our van is canvas and folding it in all soaking wet is not do-able. Luckily for us, we weren’t stuck in the van during these weeks of solid rain - we had plenty of friends to visit! Although, there were heaps of outings that I would've loved to have done put off because of the weather. We can return anytime we like so it's no drama that we didnt get to see the other places. We did have ... read more

You know, it’s kinda funny that I call this home, because the Northern Rivers area is my real home these days … this is where I hung out most of my life though, so I should give the place some credence! Shellharbour village was once just called Shellharbour. In the ‘olden days’ (when I was a kid) it was a quaint little seaside village, not unlike what Lennox Head may have been years ago. People from everywhere discovered it and decided that they’d all like to live here, and it has turned into a big thing called ‘Shellharbour City’. The distinction has to be made now, between ‘The Village’ and the surrounding areas. The expansion brings much change to the place. The gorgeous cottage I lived in for many years has been bulldozed to accommodate a ... read more

Feels a bit strange that 15 hours ago we were wearing jeans, shoes and jackets and then getting off the plane in Sydney it was instantly back to our flip flops and shorts, and almost like we never left! Our flight was full again, but it was surprisingly one of the better flights we have had and we both even managed to get some sleep which rarely happens for us on planes. Might have had something to do with how exhausted we were at the end of the trip, and the colds we had both managed to come down with and therefore the cold medication on the flight helped. But it seemed to go faster than the flight there, so there were no complaints from us. We were surprised to see the flight almost completely full ... read more

On the Thursday we left Rob an Judy’s place and headed South to Newcastle, where we had lunch with our gorgeous friends there. Melody and I have been good friends since my Body Shop days, and she has carried on with it doing really well. I tell you what - when we left there, not only did we smell scrumptious, we were hooked up with some awesome products too! Our kids all had a blast on the slip and slide - those things are so much fun! Just as well we got a bit of a cool break because the next leg of our journey was awfully hot, sticky and slow! Sydney - YUK! Traffic, traffic and more traffic. It took over 3 hours to get from the northern outskirts to the southern outskirts. YUK YUK ... read more
