Spent the night in the New England National Park and along with our next door neighbour we spent a pleasant evening around another couples camp fire swapping stories. Before that Pete and I had gone for a short walk and were amazed to see plenty of kangaroos hopping through the bush, some at an amazing pace, as though they were on something. (Probably burning up energy so that they could sleep through the night).
Went on a great walk down into a gorge, followed by a huge hike to get out of it! We are gluttons for punishment because after lunch we moved to the adjacent national park of Cathedral Rock and did another long hike there. This, however, was very challenging with the last part requiring chains anchored into the rock to be used to haul oneself up to the top and also the abseil down. It was a bit hairy but such a buzz when we had done it.
Next hike was in the Dorrigo National park and again turned out to be a brilliant walk but this time because there was a skywalk to see above the rainforest canopy where we spotted some very beautiful coloured
birds. Also on the 3 hour trail that followed we, were again, very fortunate to encounter other birds with amazing bird calls such as the whip bird that sounds like a whip and the cat bird that of course sounds like a cat!
At Coffs Harbour, on the coast now and loving the sunshine again. Went on a long bike ride along the coastal walk/bike way and had a very interesting walk around the botanical gardens. Had crumbed prawns for dinner at the harbour side fisherman’s cafe which were delicious. Waited patiently for 20,000 sooty shearwater birds to come back from the day at sea to roost on nearby Mutton Island but sadly we had to bike back to our campsite before it was totally dark and ended up not seeing them! Maybe next time!
On setting off south again we took a wrong turn and ended up on a beautiful beach called Hungry Head where we met a very lovely local lady who kindly offered to let us park our RV next to her amazing renovated house on her 5 acre section. Following a fantastic hot shower we enjoyed a great evening with a BBQ on the
Dangar Falls, Dorrigo
One of many waterfalls deck and plenty of wine. Kit was the perfect host and we were fascinated to learn that she had been a makeup artist for the BBC responsible for fixing the faces of many famous celebrities during the 60s to 90s in London and on location. We really enjoyed our stay with her and a complete change from our usual happy hour exchanges with fellow travellers.
We have just spent the day at Port Macquarie where we biked around the creek on this great boardwalk and walked along one of its many sandy beaches bordering a rainforest park. Now we are once again in a campsite by the side of the Pacific Highway where the traffic is finally quietening down with just the occasional truck passing now.
