Australia! Land of kangaroos, boomerangs and sports-mad ozzys. We couldn't believe our luck when we arrived in Sydney to blazing hot sunshine - after 3 weeks in chilly china, this was just what we needed! And to be greated by a familiar face at the airport and know that we didn't have the stress of haggling with taxis or figuring out the train routes to the nearest hostel was great too. Our first two weeks in Australia were to be spent with relatives - in Gosford, NSW. From the minute we got off the plane we suddenly began to realise that we weren't in Asia anymore - and all the touting/duping/haggling and problems with language had come to an end. This should have been a relief to us both but actually it brought a feeling of ... read more

Although school is very busy for both of us with a lot of new things to get used to, we're trying to keep at least one day on the weekend just for ourselves. We've been trying to get out and see the local area a bit and sample all it has to offer. A few weekends ago, we headed up to Terrigal Beach - the main tourist beach in the area. We watched some cricket being played in the oval nearby and were fascinated by the pelicans just waiting for the fishermen to arrive with their catch. Wow are they big! The next weekend we headed north up the coast about 30 minutes to The Entrance. What a nice spot! The Entrance beach is 8km long - and wow, that's a lot of sand! We played ... read more

We've only been settled a few days, but we've had a few adventures already! We went for a bushwalk (hike) in Bouddi National Park (about a 15 minute drive from home). It was a very good workout - some very steep descents (and therefore, ascents) through rock and bushland with the reward of some tremendous look-outs along the way. We reached the end of the Mt. Bouddi trail and decided to continue down to a very secluded beach - Maitland Bay. The decline got extremely steep with stairs cut into the side of a cliff to get you down to the bottom, but the work was well worth it. There were two retired gentlemen snorkeling off their sailboat, and two other individuals enjoying the seclusion (so secluded, that one was skinny-dipping in the middle of the ... read more

We made it! After another 2+ hours from Bangkok to Hong Kong and then 9 hours from Hong Kong to Sydney, we're finally at our new home. We got off the plane at 7:15am (which felt like 3:15am Bangkok time) and made our way through customs with little hassle. Unfortunately, my beautiful Thai hat was confiscated :( Australia is very picky about what comes into the country (you've heard about the rabbits, I presume) and banana leaf is a banned item. They offered to treat the hat for $60, but considering it was a $10 hat, we decided to just give it up. We were met at the airport by two of Steve's friends from school - Ken and Graeme. Ken exchanged to UCC 11 years ago and has been a tremendous help via email even ... read more

It was an early start this morning, as we’re bound for Newcastle. We picked up Eileen and Vic again before we commence, and also stop off at Warringah Mall, so I could post my postcards to Mum and Dad, my friend Rob, and my two Nan's. We took the Sydney to Newcastle Freeway for about an hour. It was a long, hot drive, and seemed like we were going into the desert. Once off the freeway we drove through Woy, Woy, and then Attelong. We pulled off the freeway once more, 91 km (57 miles) north of Sydney, where we arrived at Terrigal. This is home to an odd-shaped headland named Broken Head. The northern side of Broken Head is wide and flat, and is basically grassy parkland. However, the southern side is much different, as ... read more
