Getting underway... It was all about the olives. This year, our young olive tree excelled itself with fruit the size of footballs, well not quite footballs, but certainly the biggest olives we have seen anywhere. Our neighbours tree’s fruit had nearly all ripened into that dark aubergine colour that they do, but our tress steadfastly resisted showing any signs of colour/ripeness. Then we found one (or two) that broke ranks and that was good enough for Marg. “We will have green olives this year”, and with that frantic picking took place. It was a mixed blessing that not only were the fruit large, they were more than plentiful, yielding 4 full 10lt. buckets of fruit. All the fruit had to be slit and then soaked in brine, changed daily for 12 days. Marg struggled with higher ... read more

We were looking for somewhere warmer to stay for a few days and so we initially headed north from Canberra to the Hume Highway and then cut across country. Along the way we stopped to say hello to the dog from Gundagai and then drove through Wagga. From here we went "bush", driving on back roads to Lockhart and Urana before coming back to the Newell Highway at Jerilderie. Jerilderie was the town that Ned Kelly and his gang held up in 1879. They were out of their territory by a long way, having spent most of their time in Victoria. I like to think they came here for a holiday, but Ned and the boys took over 2,000 pounds from the bank and Ned attempted to have the "Jerilderie Letter", a 7,500 word essay of ... read more

As we travel around we are constantly asked where we have been and where we are heading. The answers we give get some interesting reactions. There are nods of approval when we have visited the most popular tourist spots and quizzical looks when we say we are heading somewhere more rural … like Deniliquin. A common response might be, ‘Why do you want to go there? There’s nothing there!’ Fortunately we don’t pay much attention to these comments as we like to go to places a little off the beaten track, exploring the countryside and seeing what’s on offer. As we headed away from the wine regions and into cropping country we couldn’t help but shudder at the large number of open irrigation channels wandering over the countryside that are obviously used to flood irrigate paddocks. ... read more

It’s almost time to head for home. In the last week we have traveled from the little town of Murrayville in the Victorian Mallee region right back into the Central Murray region of Echuca and Moma the two towns separated by the Murray River which places them in separate States. En route we slipped north to catch a glimpse of Hattah-Kulkayne National Park, and what a joy that was. Real Mallee bush and wildlife still exists there. Thank goodness for National Parks is my resounding cry because it’s only in National Parks and Regional state parks that the authentic and real Australia still exists. The Mallee in Victoria has been replaced by endless acres of wheat. The Mallee Highway is studded with “ghost” towns each sporting its own concrete silos along a railway line that hardly ... read more

At Conargo we parked at the oval in a free camp site. We were faced once more with having to back the van into a parking space at Conargo and finally we managed. We think we are getting better at this. We discovered that the loos attached to the caravan park had no water so after dinner we headed towards the hotel as it was a Saturday night, suspiciously dark. When we got there we found a handwritten notice on the door telling us that due to tragic circumstances the hotel was currently closed and would be reopened as soon as feasible. Oh well we tried, it just meant that we had to walk an extra 300 meters to the brand new posh ones over the other side of the sports ground. So back to the ... read more

Geo: -35.5285, 144.959New South Wales, Deniliquin 22 December - 29th December 201228th December: Today is our last full day in Deniliquin, or Deny as it is referred to locally. I am not sure what we expected but we have enjoyed our stay. Unfortunately the only public wifi in town is at McDonalds where it is very slow and seems to throw users off after 10 minutes or so, (and they were closed Christmas Day). As a result, sadly, it was not possible to skype, or post this blog. The campsite is very well managed with plenty of grassed areas which are regularly watered so the kangaroos come to graze every evening. The site also has some old steam engines that the owner rescued and are now semi-displayed. The ensuite has been a luxury - our private bathroom ... read more

Today was a ‘tourist ‘day to visit the local sights and scenes. Before heading into town I did some washing and got chatting with another lady who was in the laundry. Turned out she is also heading to Gunbower for the photo workshop weekend, but she has come all the way from Townsville Qld. We discussed how lovely it was to see Superb Parrots in the caravan park and what a great park it is beside the Edward River and just a short walk over the bridge into town. She was heading off to the sewage farm and I went for a walk on Island Sanctuary. To get to the island I had to pass the open tent area of the caravan park where the local Long-bill Corellas were eating and playing. There were two graylag ... read more

It was goodbye to Chiltern today and hello to Deniliquin. The mapping application said it should take me roughly 3 hours to travel between the two towns. I left at around 10.30am (check out time) and got to Deni at 4pm, yep I had a couple of stop along the way! Morning smoko at Bundalong Boat Ramp was the best for birding, with a section of the Murray River available with red gums, reeds and holiday home gardens. This siding town on the Murray River & Murray Valley Hwy reminded me of some beachside towns all fancy houses taking over from the original shacks with no shops or other services (one small servo). I think it’s the holiday destination for Yarrawongian’s. I had lunch and a walk around Yarrawonga to break up the day, they have ... read more

... read more
