So we’ve bought the new van and we aren’t due to head off for another 2 months – best we take it on a road trip then. I did with my son Daniel, just the two of us and we had a great time. Byron Bay is as good as anywhere ……… so Byron it is.
Dan and I have been there together twice, the first time in January 2002 and then a couple of years later. On the first occasion he was 17 but in Australia you need to be 18 to consume liquor on licensed premises, this meant he could not “party” with me at night. So after we had dined on a delicious evening meal and checked out just some of the abundant talented street buskers performing he retired to the motel while I enjoyed ice cold beer, an eclectic mix of music, fire twirlers and some such. Damn right it’s hard being a parent but fortunately I’m up to the task.
On the second visit I had met my new bride to be by then, Liz and so it was the 3 of us. Again it was pretty much the same
but fortunately Dan was able to enjoy that little bit more this time – it was around June or July and cold at night ….real cold. But we all had a very joyous time.
I’m not really sure how many times I’ve been there but it is quite a few the first time was way back in January 1981. The goings on back then shall remain secret at least on this page anyway. Chuck, Sneeze and Govan what a trip thanks.
Whoosh! Back to now! We arrived on Thursday Feb 26 and spent 4 nights there. If you are looking for a quiet spot I can highly recommend Glen Villa Resort
http://www.glenvillaresort.com.au/ Gary at the park was a real champ and made our stay that even more enjoyable. Yet just a mere 4 minute walk from here and you are smack back in the hub of the hustle and bustle that is commonplace in Byron nowadays. 34 years has altered what this little beachside hamlet. Having said that it is still a remarkable place with its natural beauty, beaches, food, music, art, it is a happening place.
Sometimes I find characters
and other times they find me it doesn’t matter as to why or how it happens what is important is that it does happen. One such notable Dan and I were fortunate enough to encounter was at the Beach Hotel on the Saturday night. A very intellectual, articulate and charming man by the name of (right here I am supposed to insert this fine gentleman’s name but I’ll be buggered if I can find it amongst my tiny pieces of paper containing extremely important information). Over an hour or so and a few beers I heard a lot but I’m sure just a tiny portion of his life story and he heard some of mine. His was a very intriguing tale. He had handed me actually I asked for it his “business card” a small piece of paper he had printed on his computer that stated as best as I can remember he was a :-

Philanthropist – as well as a few others I can’t recall.
It disappoints me also that I am unable to reveal his name hopefully it will turn up at some point.
We had taken our pushies with us and gave them a major work out, the ride/walk to the lighthouse via Wategos Beach was spectacular. Another was the ride to Broken Head Beach on our return to Byron we rode along the beach – shweet!
It was a wonderful experience and I was very fortunate to spend some quality time with my son.
Remember it’s nice to be important but it’s important to be nice.
