Today I decided to walk along Byron beach and up to the light house and hopefully see some passing whales and dolphins.
I had a leisurely start after all the kerfuffle lady night. Some of my new roomies came back and for whatever reason were either putting stuff in the fridge or on the side and were using a torch when they suddenly screamed out as it appears we had some unwanted guests, cockroaches to be precise. Food had been put in the fridge and left on the side and I don't think it occurred to any of us that we would get cockroaches, so a lesson learned there! They left and said they couldn't sleep there and went to reception. They came back later and one stayed and the other two stayed in a different dorm. When they came back they weren't quiet about it and some all got woke up twice!
When we were chatting in the morning they said they had slept in a different dorm and the cleaning staff were coming today to clear out the fridge and give everything and fumigate, and true to their word they have been, so
let's hope that is the end of it.
After breakfast, which I had in the hostel whilst chatting to Corey and a guy called TK who is a very interesting character, I decided to go to the light house. I got a map from reception and also enquired about going kayaking tomorrow to see whales, dolphins and turtles. Apparently it's meant to be a windy day tomorrow so,it may get cancelled so watch this space for more news on the tone lol.
I had missed the regular minibus into town so had to walk but it's only about -0 minutes walk. I headed into town and found the beach and headed off towards the light house. It was a glorious day and there was a sea breeze blowing. The beach was busy mostly with young back packers but also families and the water was busy with surfers and a few kite surfers, I so want to do that lol.
I took off my shoes which I'd worn as I'd sustained a foot injury yesterday whilst attempting to surf. I have a limp and it's kinder on my foot to wear my
boots rather than my flip flops. I walked along the edge of the shore paddling when the breakers rolled in and it wasn't too painful on my foot.
Where the beach ran out there was a look out point which I climbed the stairs to for a great view of the beach and the sea. I was intently studying the sea for any sight of whales. I spied what looked like spray from a blow, hole, and sure enough I was lucky enough to see a couple of whales passing over in the distance. I watched for about 20 minutes as they passed and headed off into the horizon and then headed off the beach and up hill to the light house. It was about 1.5km walk so I tried to stick to the shade as it was hot.
I reached the light house and walked up the main vantage point where sadly I didn't see any whales but I did see some dolphins instead! I had a walk down to a few more look out points including the most easterly point in Australia and then headed back the way I had come stopping off
for an ice cream on the way, well it would be rude not to lol.
I retraced my steps and took the walk back along the beach to the town stopping off for some supplies and a sandwich and then hobbled back to the Arts Factory. I had a chill out a chat with my roomies a shower changed and headed out for the evening. I sat outside by the lake for a while and then headed to the bar to watch the band who were playing as they sounded pretty good from a distance. The lead singer played guitar, a guitar type thing which goes flat across his knee, the didgeridoo, mouth organ and sings and writes his own material. He reminded me of Newton Faulkner especially with the dreads.
I then came back to the room to warm up a while as it was chilly outside and chatted to one of the girls in our dorm. Around 10pm I caught the mini bus into town along with a few people I had met whilst I have been staying here and others. We headed to the cheeky monkey pub/ restaurant/ club but I
couldn't get in as I had no photo ID. So I had to head back to the hostel on the minibus get my passport and head back. As I queued one if the guys I knew came out and apparently he had been told by the security he had to leave as he was too drunk. He wasn't and when I got in there in old see people in a far worse state than he was. Apparently he gets this problem all the time, he has one of those faces which people think makes him look drunk or stoned bless him.
So I queued, showed my ID got a patronising pat on the head from the security guard 'well done' which made me want to punch him but I thought better of it lol. I paid my entrance fee and entered the packed, loud room and got a drink from the bar. I did try to find the other people I knew but it was packed and very difficult to get round the rooms. I had several drinks spilled on my lets and feet and managed not to get my drink spilled so I headed back to
the door area drank my cider and headed back to the hostel on the bus via the pizza house and a slice of pizza as I was peckish lol. The. It was time for bed zebedee :-)
