FACES OF PELICANS "A wonderful bird is a pelican His bill will hold more than his belican. He can take in his beak Food enough for a week, But I'm damned if I see how the helican." I understand Dixon Lanier Merritt penned this as a limerick in 1910. It was later published in 1940 by the American poet Ogden Nash, best known for his humorous rhyming verse, in his "The Face is Familiar" ... Read Full Entry

Fantastic
So glad to see a blog focused on these beautiful birds! We only have brown pelicans (I believe) in my part of the world, but the Australian variety are far more eye catching! Your captured the 'dance' beautifully!

Fantastic
A very personal blog Sylvia...the longer I stayed the more fascinated I became. Love your perspective of the dance for this pic which to me was a synchronised bow. The "It's Showtime" and the beak contortion pics were taken on continuous mode so are in order as they unfolded. I've never seen these Pelican shows before so glad you appreciated them.

Competition...
Looks like you have a worthy adversary in a dance off

Competition...
This little fella is my undisputed Dance King, Anita. How can I possibly compete with his moves? Hope this blog made you just a little homesick to cheer you from the political blues & hues surrounding you in Atlanta at this time. There is fortunately light at the end of the dark non-partisan tunnel as Georgia has heeded the call. Keep safe and thanks for keeping in touch.

And enjoy I did!
It takes great skill and patience to be a wildlife photographer!

And enjoy I did!
This blog is for nature lovers Bob...that endures and is always full of surprises with its beauty. It was only with much patience that these descendants from dinosaurs displayed so much I had never previously seen or imagined. It is only with many pics that their wonder is thus revealed. Glad you enjoyed them.

One of the birds I actually like
We are not bird watchers. We rarely go on birding trips or visit national parks primarily known for their birds. However, there are some birds we really like. Birds of pray, flamingos, penguins and pelicans are among them. We would love to have seen the pelicans you saw. There are a few more birds we find interesting but after that we prefer seeing other things. That's a really fun photo you took by the way. /Ake

One of the birds I actually like
I have never had the patience to be a wildlife photographer, Ake but their beauty has always captured me even if patience has not. May this blog open your Swedish eyes to the little things of Nature's glory that are all around you...and may the birds reveal their quirky characters before departing in flight. Birds of prey, flamingoes, penguins and pelicans...great start...much more to enthuse as you discover!

The Pelican
Nice job giving these fellas some shine! I still remember the first time I saw a pelican in the wild. On Padre Island beach down in Texas. Looked up and saw a large flock of them flying low in the sky. They were greyer and more swarthy than the natty ones that you managed to capture images of.

The Pelican
I guess the pelican may not visit you in New York, Tommy, but 'tis pleasing by my blog they be revealed as they helican. Hope they also cheered your day.

Pelican are Beautiful!
Magnificent poses, contortions and angles. I want to buy a go-pro so I can film birds in flight while I take my beach walks. They often fly just above the waterline when we are swimming. It is marvelous. Wings spread and flapping... your photos are a marvel dancing one. Thanks for sharing this trip.

Pelicans are Beautiful!
A bit of a variation from your beloved penguins, MJ...but who can doubt the fascination and beauty of pelicans as my pics profess. At one point a squadron of five flew past only metres above the water line while often others rode the air thermals far above. A go-pro or a drone would reveal amazing angles. Biggest problem for me would be I'd have to read the Instruction Manuals!!!

Beautiful Pelicans
Great choice of pics, MJ. One of the extraordinary contortions of its beak that I discovered to my delighted surprise.

I can hear them
Wonder what they are talking about.

I can hear them
Next time I'll have to video them, MJ. Then there'll be even more to wonder about. The pelicans were the highlight of my holiday...never imagined I would ever be expressing that. Maybe this fella is saying just that!!!

Put a sock on it!
An amazing collection of pelican poses. Those with the head thrown back and the beak pointing to the sky above took just a moment to comprehend. They look like someone put a sock over them from the beak and up past the head down the neck.

Put a sock on it!
Hi Liz. I've been missing in TB action recently and just seen your post that reminds me that the good things in the incredible World of Nature do not rest but keep on coming on. The more time I spent with pelicans the more that surprised. Magic happens when one dwells a while! Still haven't seen Simon's pics from Russia so time he took his pelican socks off I reckon!!!
