To-day we packed up and headed north for Merry Beach (1/2 hour north of Batemans Bay). We decided to spend the day sightseeing on the way. Our first stop was at a little town called Tilba Tilba where we stopped and visited the Foxglove Gardens. We enjoyed spending time wandering through the gardens. We then travelled to a town called Kianga for Morning Tea (Tourist Drive 5). Along the way we saw an echidna crossing the road. Poor Steve tried to pull up the van so as I could run back and take a photo. I just caught him before he disappeared into the bush. We drove through some lovely beachside towns on the way. Malua Bay was a very pretty spot. We stopped for a fish and chip lunch at Batehaven before arriving late afternoon ... read more

Day 27 - It was a wet and windy night so neither of us slept brilliantly and we were both awake early. We’d said that we’d get up at a reasonable time and go for a walk over Durras Mountain in the morning and then drive out somewhere else in the afternoon. Reminding ourselves of that, we got ready for the day ahead with a couple of hot drinks and a wash. Well actually I snuck a shower! It’s $1 for a hot shower but it lasts for ages and ages so I feel a bit guilty when I’ve run out of things to wash and the water was still going! We headed across toward the camp office just to check which direction we should head in for the walk. Once we’d got our bearings we ... read more

Day 26 - Merimbula to Pretty Beach, Termeil - Journey time 3hrs - 180 kms (inc short stop) We woke quite early this morning courtesy of the local airfield! It meant we were packed up and on our way in good time though. As we left Merimbula the tide was in which had filled the waterways and we remarked that doing the boardwalk this morning would have been a very different scene. Tom Tom is doing a great job and we’re so chuffed that we got the Oz maps on to it (cheers Tony!). We know that we shouldn’t rely on it 100% and that we’ll need to get some maps but at the moment it’s doing a sterling job. It’s an interesting journey today along the A1 Princes Highway through Bega, Narooma and Batemans Bay. ... read more

Phillip Island was beautiful -we scored a few days of good weather and really missed Sam who would have loved the area. We toured the island and saw lots of penguins huddling under the board walk and Si and Est managed to catch some good surf - spotting seals playing in the waves one morning. The second campground we found was bang on the beach and swarming with crazy possums. We took plenty of beach time in preparation for Dad's 66th birthday and that evening walked along the shore to a restaurant for a boozy meal. Then Dad (with help) managed to admirably disgrace himself - getting told off for playing too noisily on the children's play park at 1am. That second childhood is kicking in with a vengeance. The next day slightly more wholesome entertainment ... read more

Well folks, I know it’s been a while but we have been travelling - a lot. And therefore my time at the keyboard was limited by both time and inclination =) We spent a wonderful Christmas and New Years with Tom and Clarissa in Brisbane, however we missed our families and friends from the west a great deal. Once the festivities were concluded it was time for us to head into northern NSW with special interest as it is in this region we believed to be the location of our next residence and hopefully a base to both nest and consolidate the last half a decade of work. We bypassed Byron Bay, as we both have been there several times and had already earmarked it as a possible settling place and headed to Yamba and the ... read more

14th December 2008 - GETTING FESTIVE After leaving Eden we set off towards Narooma. We stopped in Mystery Bay along the way because we liked the name. Didn't appear to be much of a mystery though as quite a few people were on the beach having a walk (still too cold for sun worshipping and swimming). Some good waves crashing against the rocks made it a nice walk. Anyone into rock pooling would have had a field day here too!! Worth a visit but why it's a mystery will remain a mystery to me!!! We arrived in Narooma at around 4.30pm. We tried to get the burner on to cook some soup but Billy wind kept blowing out the flame until eventually we admitted defeat!! Bread and Butter it was for tea!!! We then drove into ... read more

Hi All, The first day of summer here in Australia. Christmas decorations are going up and it's a beautiful 25C day. I'm presently in a Batemans Bay, a small coast town about 300K from Sydney. The rains have caught up with me, but they've mostly developed in the afternoon and I've managed to get settled in before they hit! Went whale watching in Merimbula and got to see a couple of hump back whales and calfs. Also in Merimbula, I was invited on a morning sea kayak paddle in the bay and saw a sting ray and inspected a commercial oyster operation. Hope all is well with everyone and for those in the states, you had a good Thanksgiving! Take care, George ... read more

As we drove down the Princes Highway early on Friday morning, the rain splattered down the windscreen and the sky was a dark shade of grey. But it was a long weekend, and we didn’t mind the weather, for we were going on an adventure in to an unknown region of NSW. We’d only ever ventured as far as Wollongong on the South Coast, so you can imagine how pleasantly surprised we were by the scenery and surroundings as we travelled further away from Sydney and then Wollongong, in to the Shoalhaven region. It is a very scenic drive and we were taken by the real countryside charm of villages liked Berry, where we couldn’t resist a stop off on the way back for coffee and chocolate brownies with whipped cream and yes, you guessed it, ... read more
