We bought our tickets to Africa (SF to Istanbul to Cairo to East Africa and beyond) three months ago, but with just two weeks til departure the anticipation is killing us. 99% of our preparations are done--pouring over military survival guides and McGuyver reruns, perfecting our poop-'n-bury techniques, and learning how to tame a pack of wild hyenas with a spork and peanutbutter. We also got vaccinations, updated our passports, and packed the band-aids...just in case. In lieu of travel guides, we've been reading an eclectic assortment of Africa-related histories, memoirs, novels, and essays with hopes of gaining a better sense of context for our trip than what might be gathered from "The Gods Must Be Crazy." Most of all, we're amazed not at what we've learned, but at how little we knew. Like the fact ... read more

Just found this site when I was entering some tours I want to go on next summer when I go to Europe! I probably am doing this all wrong with the typing, entering, and images. My only regret is not having this website sooner! Lets see if the map of countries I have been to works properly. UPDATE: I don't know how to do it....... read more

27th September; drove to San Diego. The drive was OK except it got a little hairy just before the LA turnoff. San Diego looks really nice. It is tidy and clean; the Westfield shopping center was nice! American people (on the whole so far) are really polite; sirs, ma’ams all over the place! It reminds me a little of Brisbane and how I imagine Perth to be. Last night we went to see Dead Can Dance. It was really awesome!! I cried with happiness! ... read more

The problem at the moment is that we are tearing around the place much more than we ever did in India and public internet access here in America is less common and more expensive than there. Hence the diary doesn't get updated often and when we do it's difficult to remember everything or anything we have done. Alaska is huge and wild. And expensive. It seems old age Americans like to cruise up the west coast, to places like Anchorage, Juneau and Whittier and then experience 'wild Alaska' in total luxury. You can pay $5000 for a week long 'back country' fishing experience which in reality is a luxury transport, 5 star lodge and someone to hold your fishing rod for you. $500 gets you flown in the interior to land next to 30 bears feeding ... read more

G'day everyone! Well this is the last bit of the trip up in Alaska. Did a fair bit of travel this section so this is a little longer. It's hard to believe I've almost spent a whole month here in Alaska. I think that's plenty enough time. I would've liked to do more hiking, but the weather has been more wet than usual, so that's kind of shelved that (we've had 3 100% sunny days, even Alaskans reckon that's wet). I would've liked to hike a few more remote areas like the Wrangell Mountains. If you hire a car in Alaska, there's a lot of roads that you're not allowed to travel on because of being not well maintained gravel trails. There are really only 6 major highways you can travel, and while Alaska is big, ... read more

We left Toronto on September 22. We went to Kingston, Ontario area and cruised the Thousand Islands. Then we went to New Jersey to stay with my sister Cecilia and her husband Lloyd. Our general itinerary is: Hong Kong (2 weeks), China (Yunnan - 3 weeks), Laos (3 weeks), Thailand (7 weeks), Cambodia (3 weeks), Vietnam (6 weeks), China (1 week) ,Hong Kong (1 week) We are excited about the trip. Here are our some of our pre-trip thoughts. In Yunnan, we will visit the smaller towns near Kunming. In Laos, we will visit the UNESCO site of Luang Prubang and stay a few days on stilted houses (with no electricity) by the river. In Thailand, we will visit the National Parks and minority tribes in Chiang ... read more
