Scene of the wreck
Garners Ferry Rd and Harmon Rd. Sunday morning, August 30th 2009, started out with lots of excitement. I had spent 2 months planning an Iron Butt Association certified all South Carolina Saddle Sore. I sent a lot of time planning and re-planning the route. It was and still is a great route. For those who do not know what a Saddle Sore is, it is 1000 miles ridden in 24 hours or less. And I took it one step further and made sure that my route did not use the same road twice and did not cross over a road already used. The route would allow me to see a lot of the state and would require 21 documented corners.
Now back to the ride. I left the house at 5:45 a.m. and head off to Bunky’s Market to get my starting receipt. The receipt was good and the ride officially started at 6:36 hours on the 10000 block of Garners Ferry Rd. in Eastover, SC. I was off headed for the Sonoco gas station located at Garners Ferry Rd. at I-77 in Columbia, SC. Eight miles later the ride was over.
At Garners Ferry Rd. and Harmon Rd. in Hopkins, SC I had to
Drip Drip
Bike on the side of the road dripping oil. make an evasive maneuver to avoid a vehicle that crossed my path so they could make a quick right turn onto Harmon Rd. I laid the bike down on its left side and slide across several traffic lanes. Thank God I was wearing ATGATT (all the gear all the time). The only damage to me was a minor rug type burn area on my left elbow. I woke up the next morning very sore, but uninjured.
I was able to get the bike up and push it to the side of the road. I was hoping for minor damage only and continue on this now tainted Saddle Sore. I thought I would be able to keep going until I saw oil dripping out of the side cover of the V-twin. Ride over!
For the first time I had to use my AMA (American Motorcycle Association) tow plan. I dug the card out of my wallet and used my cell phone to make the call. Doug answered and was ready to help. AMA did a great job, however Express Towing dropped the ball as far as I can tell. I sat on the side of the road for two
Honda of Sumter
THis is were Jim is going to fix Thumper hours waiting for them to show up. Luckily, I had called my wife so at least I could sit in the family car and lick my wounds so to speak. The bike was towed to Honda of Sumter (HOS) located on Broad St. in Sumter, SC. Honda of Sumter has been very helpful.
During my wait I called the insurance company and got the claim started.
The Honda shop was closed on Monday so on Tuesday (09-01-09) I took the family car to Sumter to check on Thumper (the wrecked bike). Jim at HOS says that he can have me back on the road in about 10 days. Thanks Jim!! I will say that the bike did not look as bad at HOS then it did on the side of Garners Ferry road with oil running out of the side case.
Total miles ridden = 8
***note**** This millage does not include the miles the Shadow spent on the back of the tow truck.
