The Redwood National Park near Crescent City, California is a beautiful park. We were all so surprised that the trees only grow in groves. You suddenly drive into them and just as suddenly drive out of them. These pictures will show their immense size compared to a human being.

Wow

Look at the roots on this tree! Actually the root systems on these trees are very small compared to their size. They are hundreds of years old.

This was the first large redwood entering the park. Harold, Katie and Patti standing in front of this giant tree show just how insignificant we really are compared to these trees. Walking back into the grove was an experience.

The tree behind us is on its side. It fell many years ago and now has new growth of ferns and trees on its side. All four of us together could not reach around this tree. It is 2-1/2 times as high as we are tall, on its side!

The bottom of this giant fallen tree makes Harold look small. Harold is nearly 6 ft. tall and with his arms outstretched, he still looks dwarfed in comparison!

The extremely thick bark on these trees prevents them from being damaged in forest fires. It is almost impossible to burn one of these trees.

The branches are so high up the tree they can barely be seen from the ground.
