Reunion in the Rockies Most of you know me as a globetrekker, but what you don’t know is that back at home, aside from traveling to California, I have only gone as far west as Ohio. “America the Beautiful” was a song I used to sing in elementary school every day after reciting the Pledge, but until a few weeks ago I had no idea what a plain or a prairie looked like! And mountains? According to my roommate, the Appalachians are like hills compared to the Rockies. So to see the prairies, plains, and vast mountainsides that our national songs mention, my college roommate and I headed out west towards the lands discovered by Lewis & Clark for a crazy trip involving 9 states in 8 days! Here was the itinerary: Day 1: LA to ... read more

Starting out the overseas trip traveling in a minivan covering 2000 miles from Florida to Boston while watching the 70’s show on the computer with plugs and chords coming out of any possible outlet, driving into the city that never sleeps at 12:30 a.m., following a map choosing the “quickest” and mostly wrong route, seeing the famous landmark that immigrants first see entering the US, driving up and around through the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina, walking around the US capitol for a meet with Bush at the White House and ending with some much deserved drinks in Boston.... read more

Have returned to LA and managed to get some internet access. The only place that had decent access over the last week charged 20c/min, so didn't have enough time available to update this. What's more is I have figured out how to upload photos from my camera! We started off getting to Budget Rentacar. Got there and guess what...NO MUSTANG!!! NOT HAPPY, JAN! Instead, we got a Chrysler Sebring. The only thing it has in common with a Mustang is that it is a convertible. The similarities end there. It is a gutless, front wheel drive hunk of yank trash that manages to bring a whole new meaning to "torque steering". There has been assurances made that there will indeed be Mustang action while we're here. As it turns out, it didn't make much difference as ... read more

I’m retroactively blogging a trip my brother and I took around to some of the National Parks in the US in August of 2005. I wanted to put some information out about these amazing places, as they are, in my opinion, the highlights of the US. The drive from Moab to Rocky Mountain National Park, north of Boulder Colorado, takes you straight through the heart of the Rockies, and some of the highest peaks in the continental U.S. Driving through the park you constantly see huge herds of elk, some beautiful birds, and the occasional moose. We did a few small trails that were fairly unremarkable the first day, but on the second day we ended our month long trip through the national parks of the U.S. with a fifteen mile extravaganza. We covered an amazing ... read more

Standing outside the only bar crazy enough to stay open during a hurricane, beer in hand fighting the 130 km/hr winds blowing sand, rain and trees, right on da beach! Then back to the hostel for beers, drinking games, wet as and no power! I planned to stay 1 night in Fort Lauderdale but ended up staying a week! On the bus from Key west I met Forest from Texas and he planned on going back home to Houston but decided to stay, so we went to the hostel. ( which was a pretty sweet hostel) There was a heap a girls from camp Chipinaw (Rach's & Allies camp) stayin as well (aussies, kiwis & poms). "Lord, how the day passes! It's like a life--so quickly when we don't watch it and so slowly if we do."---John Steinbeck August 22, 2005, Monday. Left Glacier early and headed to Missoula, Montana. Needed to do some shopping and make an appointment for the Bothan to get the oil changed, etc. August 23, 2005, Tuesday. Stopped at Freightliner and got our Bothan taken care of . We biked around Missoula, a neat college town with great trails. This is the only town in Montana that voted for Kerry. So we felt at home. August 24, 2005, Wednesday. We biked and biked all around Missoula. Stopped at the bike shop and lots of little shops along the way. We treated ourselves to a grand prime rib dinner. ... read more

Spent a week in Columbia, MO before heading west. Alan had one more eye doctor visit and he got the OK to travel to higher elevations (yeah!) Columbia is home to the University of Missouri, so it was a typical college town. We drove north a bit to see an Amish farm community where we bought homemade pickles and apple butter (very inexpensive). There was a sign at the end of the unpaved road indicating that the 1st house on the right had apple butter for sale, so we just walked up to the house and went into the open back porch where the lady of the house came out to sell her wares. A very simple life! We saw an operating sawmill, farmers bringing in their corn on horse-drawn wagons, and a precious little girl ... read more
