Ok, I admit it, I was caught by the hype of making the turn of the millennium one to remember. No fear of the Y2K bug, no fear of lunatics sending a missile into a crowd in a high profile location. SO, Vegas here we come! Cruising into the Strip for the first time is a mighty experience, even for an experienced traveler like myself. The eyes are all over the place, there is so much to see, everywhere you look. The insanely grand hotels/casinos, all of them a theme park in themselves, leave a lasting impression for the first-timer. Appears to be a good choice for celebrating the grandest of New Years, the holiday with capital H. Our little group of six lucked out on the rental car; found one that fit our needs exactly, ... read more

A car ride in the desert is about as exciting as it sounds. Even the four hour ride between Los Angeles and Las Vegas would be a rather dull transport, had circumstances been ordinary. However, the occasion is a bit special. Six friends in a party mood, travelling in a big white rental car to celebrate Y2K in Vegas. The ride is some four hours, meaning that random pit stops are a must. One takes place right after having crossed the border to Nevada. Stretching the legs, taking a leak, getting a drink, or what have you. And, looking up. The smog in LA does not allow anyone to see through the sky. Light pollution in Las Vegas is no better. But here, in the middle of the desert, with clear air and no lights, the ... read more

North America » United States » Alabama » Mobile December 12th 1999

The bus between Mobile, Alabama and New Orleans, Louisiana, isn’t full. Not even close. I find an empty seat in the back of the bus. A girl is sitting on seat on the opposite side. Fairly attractive, mid-twenties. She's from South Carolina, speaks with that wonderful southern accent you just have to love. She's mixing her soda with vodka. Alcohol is strictly prohibited on the Greyhound bus she explains, and she has to hide it. Gives me a sip of her mixed drink, although "I never let anyone taste my drinks". She's an exotic dancer. She knows how to make that extra buck. Smile, and they will give you money. Even if you’re having a bad day - smile. Extended customer service? She hasn’t seen her child in many years. The father took it away, and ... read more

This past weekend a festival called “The Great Hawaiian Folk Life Festival” was held on Sat. and Sun. at the Kapiolani Park in Waikiki. Also held was a Parade through Waikiki, which I was not able to attend, to honor Prince Jonah Kuhio Kalanianaole, a popular Hawaiian Prince known as the People’s Prince, who instituted the Hawaiian Homestead Act which enables needy Native Hawaiian affordable housing up to this very day. A main beach in Waikiki is named after him, this past Monday was a State holiday to honor him, and a long highway known as the Kalanianaole Hwy. runs from East Honolulu, through Waimanalo and a large part of Kailua, bearing his name. The Festival ran in conjunction with a Arts and Craft Fair and featured popular Hawaiian Music Groups and a special Area ... read more

On the evening of March 31, a fire broke out in a Unit, 2 units away causing mostly smoke damage. So the past 3 weeks were spent cleaning, vacuuming, scrubbing, washing, etc. to remove the odor so I could finally move back in. After 3 weeks, I was able to accomplish pretty much was I could to make the place livable, and not a day too soon, as the 23rd Annual Hawaii Pacific University Intercultural Day was to take place, in downtown. Though I only discovered it during the past 5 years of it occurrence, it does give me something to look forward to. The students from the various countries set up booths mostly for informational purposes to give others the opportunity to learn and hopefully appreciate the richness of their culture. At about noon, ... read more

The Eastern Seacoast on the island of Oahu, is what probably most people elsewhere, may imagine what Hawaii looks like with it’s tropical greenness, slow unhurried lifestyle and miles of beaches and seacoast. As one exits the Likelike (pron. Likay Likay) Hwy. from the Wilson Tunnel, it may seem to him, like he just entered a Juraiassac Park. The first town one enters along this scenic coastline drive is Kaneohe (see a previous blog), a rather large low rise city with lots of commercial activity. After passing through this town, one comes across only small rural communities, with mostly Mom and Pop stores, and occasion souvenir or fruit stands. These communities are Ahuimanu, Kahaluu, Waikane, Waiahole, Kualoa, Kaawa, Kahana, Punaluu, Hauula, Laie and Kahuku. On the first 15 miles or halfway up to the coast ... read more

North America » United States » Alaska » Alaskan Highway November 30th 1999

12 June -- well, today we expect to arrive at the Grand Teton National Park. In the last few days, We encountered our first rainstorm as we neared Kansas City, and - yes - the small pass-through window into the camper leaks in spite of the pounds of caulk Tom used before we left. We’ll see how bad it gets before we caulk the whole window. We’ve found that credit card companies are becoming incredibly cautious about fraud. Bear in mind that we called our CC company before we left TN, telling them that we’d be on the road to Alaska for 3 months. We had an accident with Tom’s new laptop (lemonade doesn’t mix well with electronics) and bought a new laptop in Kansas City. That caused our CC company to block the card, which ... read more
