Day two…5 States: Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Ohio, Indiana, Illinios We learned that our truck likes to drop down to 2nd gear when going up hills with cruise control. Benji was not too happy about this, thus began his “bad truck” motto as he hit the brakes and acted like he was driving a stick again. On pitstop number 1, we realized that the end caps for our bumper fell out. Our sewage hose could have fallen out too. Don’t worry, Mandie fixed it! And, duct tape makes its first appearance. Corn…lots and lots of corn. It’s International Snood Day! Once we were parked at our campsite, Benji learned that you must unhook safety chains before moving the truck. “Happy” was the dude who checked us in our campsite. He loves his gater! Mandie has a ... read more

Just finishing up some last minute details, packing, sorting, panicking and what not. I managed to get my pack weight down to about 23lbs (10kg), and I'm sure within a few weeks I'll whittle it down even more. It's quite fun to see how light you can go - I definitely beat Josh, but he's carrying a lot of shared items. Better finish off the last few things and attempt some sleep. With a bit of luck, the next entry will be from somewhere in Guatemala. ... read more

Taking Paul's uncle's advice, we stopped at the tourist info center when we got to Arkansas. We picked up a couple of brochures for crystal mining and continued on our way to Memphis. We hadn't planned any stops along the way, but found a place near enough to the highway that we decided to spend a day mining. Here's how it worked: it's a real, active crystal mine that dumps its leavings in a separate area. It's basically mud and dirt that doesn't have any giant crystals in it. They open this area up to the public. Of course you sign a waiver saying that any injuries or death aren't their fault, pay $15 for the right to take home whatever you find in a day's dig, and march out there with rice sacks and ... read more

This morning we packed up and left from the Amish area of Berlin, OH. We drove to Granville, OH to the Lazy River Campground, which is just to the East of Columbus, OH. This is a campground we’ve been to before with one of our Bounder clubs. We came here to spend a long weekend with good friends. We arrived a day early and decided to ride around and check out the area. The town of Granville is a very upscale town with interesting shops and restaurants. We also went to nearby Newark and had lunch. We came back to the campground and just relaxed the rest of the day. After all of the activities at the Bounder rally, it was nice to catch our breath.... read more

Well, tonight I'm packing for Florida. I'm off to visit my family, yay! It's been a long time since I've hopped a plane and gone down there, and I'm looking forward to being in heat and sunshine. And the intense air conditioning. It's been a busy couple of days that have left me literally sick and tired. I had an upper GI series of x-rays done, and I didn't take so well to all the barium I had to swallow. So the past two days have been spent at home with me grumpy and moaning and pale as a sheet. Don't think I want to have that done again. I'm feeling ok today, but didn't go to belly dancing lessons. I needed one more day to relax and recover. But hey, that means all the laundry's ... read more

Geo: 46.2741, -119.274Back again! Thought I'd fill in the gaps and then finish out the trip. So sorry about all the misspellings and wrong grammar! I was paying by the minute and had to be fast, that with the different keyboard really had me! are those excuses good enough?? :) May 31:Mauro, our apt. manager met us at the airport when we arrived. A little apprehensive/ curious about the upcoming ride into Roma, as we had heard about the driving.... He drove 120 km and a little faster. I guess that's 80 and above... people were passing us.... no turn-signaling to change lanes by anyone, motorcycles just drive inbetween the cars, not in their own lanes.....Found Piazza Navona, went into some churches there, walked into the Pantheon, WOW! very impressive, Campo Di'Fiore...June1:Took a bus to the ... read more

Hallo zusammen!!

Day 42 – Sunday – Los Angeles, California Well today we saw how the other half live!!! We took two tours. One was a trolley tour which took us past Paramount Studios, the Capital Records building, and all the usual. The second tour was of the movie star homes through Beverly Hills, Bel Air and of course down Sunset & Rodeo Drive. Some of the homes there are just AMAZING. And every car we saw was a Merc, BMW or Lexus! I think dinner that night was yummmmy California Pizza Company. (Ok my brain is hurting and it's all a bit of a blur!!). I'm going to start in the middle here and we'll work our way back as we go along. Sound good? Awesome. So, today is more or less a new beginning for me. I'm about 4 weeks or so into my marathon training and really starting to notice some results. For instance. Last Saturday I ran seven miles. Seven miles! Seven! Now, in comparison to the what, 26.2 that I'll have to run in October, yeah, seven is not such a huge number. But, in comparison to the roughly, oh, I don't know... none, that I used to run, seven is Huge! So that's a major change right there. The next big change... pain. Whew. I mean, I've had a messed up knee for some time now and that's no big thing (especially since I actually bought ... read more

Hey guys! Ben here. I've spent the last week or so keeping a fairly detailed journal of events so if you're a hardcore blog reader (as a lot of you should be after reading Dave Blair's epic travel diaries!) here is a slightly more long-winded version of the first 6 days. If you can't be bothered reading all this, Iain's next bite-sized journal entry should be available in the next few days or so. Ok, here goes... Day 1 (04/06/07) We set off from Dumfries at about 8am on 4th June and arrived at Glasgow International Airport at approximately 10am, 2 hours 20 minutes before our first flight to London Gatwick was due to leave. At check-in the woman behind the desk told us to go to the information desk to try and change our flights ... read more
