I have just finished reading a book on football programmes. I know it wouldn't be a normal topic of conversation in a travelblog, but bear with me. The plot of the book - if you can call it as such - features a transatlantic relocation and a choice. A difficult choice! Which of your extensive programme collection have you space to bring with you. You envisage a few hundred in a small suitcase, but are allocated a mere Tupperware box. The plastic container will ensure they arrive in the same pristine condition - you haven't kept in good condition all these years just to add unnecessary creases at this late stage in the day. The disadvantage is the box has a capacity of precisely 32. What would I do in similar circumstances? How would I choose which to bring with me? In a year where the global pandemic has thwarted my plans to go more places and see more sport, it seemed a good question to ask. On a damp and windy Thursday morning, it seemed a very good question. It was also a good excuse to explore the depths of cupboards upstairs to unearth those treasured memories.

There are a multitude of reasons to travel. My two big passions are sport and travel. What better than if you can combine them? Travel to a new country or a new city, watch some sport and see the sights at the same time. If you can snaffle a programme or some form of matchday magazine to mark the event, so much the better. It helps with the memories. What better way than to justify a 2000 mile round trip for a 0-0 draw, than to see some sights as well? Football is always the primary objective, but if that is not at hand seek out the alternatives. It doesn't have to be a major, top class event. The crowd number is even largely immaterial. In fact, large crowds can restrict movement inside a stadium and make it mighty tricky to get a ticket in the first place. Of course if an opportunity presents itself to see top class athletes of any description, you take it. If Dan Marino, Troy Aikman or John Elway are playing down the road, you head straight over. Well you do, if you are me?

the space of the next 14-15 years or so, clocked up a visit to 33 states. As a kid who had been nowhere much and had to be content with looking at an atlas, it amazes me that I can write 33 states. It goes without saying, there would be some sport within those visits. Sky Sports (aided by the BBC) in the UK has now transformed American Football into a major spectacle, but at the turn of the 1990s it was Channel 4 who were the trailblazers in the coverage. A highlights package was fronted by a former rugby player turned place kicker from St Albans, Mick Luckhurst, whose job it was to explain the finer points of the action to an un-educated UK TV audience. I was glued. Mick knew his onions. He had a 6 season career with the Atlanta Falcons. At the time of his retirement , he was record points scorer for the franchise. In somewhat unusual circumstances, Mick even scored a touchdown on a fake field goal play in 1982. In a sport dominated by statistics, he maintains a 100% rushing attempt record. Number of rushes - 1. Touchdowns - 1. The first game

highlights I had seen on TV were an event in themselves, played out in huge stadiums with huge crowds. After deciding to avoid a local club for my home grown football allegiance, I stayed "local" with my American Football choice. The Cleveland Browns it was then! It would take a couple of years before I could persuade the Other Half,, that she wanted to spend part of her holiday entitlement in an industrial area that had seen better days. This was an especially relevant conversation, given that we lived and worked in an industrial area that had seen better days for the rest of the year! The Cleveland Municipal Stadium would have to wait.

After a trip to California and Arizona in 1989 on purely sightseeing mission, it was time to spread our wings a bit. Time for a road trip. We touched down in Texas. There were no specific plans - just a car and a few motel guides. Where to next? Texas Stadium, Irving obviously. The stadium had a hole in the roof, so God can see his favourite football team. At least, that is what they will tell you in northern Texas. It was a good

job the man was looking on from upstairs, because that made it easier to get tickets on the day. Dallas Cowboys were not the great team they would become at this stage, so the fickle fans weren't packing the place out every game. There is no place for losers in American sport and this team were a work in progress. The rookie Number 1 draft pick quarterback, Troy Aikman, hadn't quite reached his ultimate level at this point and the Marino led Miami Dolphins comfortably brushed them aside. They have a saying "Don't Mess With Texas", but Miami paid no heed to the message. The score seemed closer than the game itself at 17-14. Dallas finished an appalling with a 1-15 season record. The other alas team, the Cowboys Cheerleaders, put up a better show. I hadn't realised just how seriously they take their cheerleading, but "America's Sweethearts" were on their game. We meandered via the grassy knoll in downtown Dallas and Austin, in order to meet up with David in San Antonio. You are thinking Davy Crockett at the Alamo, but I was aiming for David 'The Admiral" Robinson and the San Antonio Spurs too. I will save the

basketball adventures for another day.

After checking out space territory and the Astrodome for future reference in Houston, the beach at Galveston, we pointed the car east. We stopped off for breakfast in Beaumont, East Texas. Did we want grits? What are grits? "Grits are just grits", said the frustrated server - somewhat puzzled by folk who had never seen this alien foodstuff. "Them there are are grits", as she waved her arms in the direction of another passing plate. We declined. We were off the beaten track now, headed for USA party central, New Orleans. The LA Rams were in town and it seemed a popular excursion for their fans. The free for all drinking, music and wall to wall bars draw thousands of visitors keen to live life to the full. The Louisiana Superdome was indeed super. It had no hole in the roof, but it did have jazz bands playing in the aisles. The catering at Dallas had a distinctive Mexican feel, but here there was a Cajun slant. The local Saints and LA Rams played out an enthralling, high scoring 20-17 game to round off the trip. It went to overtime - no draws allowed

on this side of the pond.

The ticketing on this first foray into American sport had been on a wing and a prayer. We hadn't advance seats and just purchased on matchday. However it was a long way to go to be denied entry, so I got busy before the next trip. It sounds simple, but before the worldwide web it was anything but. I literally just called up the relevant clubs and ordered the seats on the phone. Will Call - as they say in the States - was the way forward. Posting was out of the question. I had some amusing conversations, trying to explain we were in Cleveland, England and not the Cleveland, Ohio version. England, not New England was also a source of confusion. This wasn't a problem though, when speaking with the Cleveland Browns. The stars of ticketing were the Phoenix Cardinals - perhaps because were so used to visitors seeking winter sunshine. They still wrote to me in England for years after, querying my game order requirements for the forthcoming season. Customer service at a high level. The 1990 agenda featured the Cardinals being invaded by the travelling Cheeseheads from Green Bay. The

sunny climate of Arizona had enticed them away from chilly Wisconsin in late November. The average temperatures in Green Bay are lucky to hit 40 degrees at that time of year. Meanwhile, it was a pleasant 70 degrees in the Sun Devil Stadium, Tempe. The focus of the Wisconsin visitors seemed to be on having a good time and basking in the sun. The team had kept their minds on the job and won 24-21. The only person not to enjoy the trip had been Don "Magic Man" Majkowski, who left with his arm in a sling.

The previous week we had been paying homage to Top Gun in La Jolla, finding that the bars of the Gaslight District in San Diego were very amenable and fitting in a date with the Chargers versus Denver Broncos. The Chargers played in the Jack Murphy Stadium, which was a world away from the others we had so far visited. It was multi-sport and shared with the Padres baseball team. I remember there being a cannon positioned on the field quite close to us, which was fired on the occasions of the Chargers advancing towards a score. The game finished 19 -

7. The Chargers have now departed for LA, leaving the city without NFL team. The movement of sports franchises in North America is a puzzle to most Europeans. The owners seem to have no conscience on just taking a whole setup and moving anywhere that guarantees them a better Stadium facility. I guess Chargers fans can console themselves, that at least LA is close enough to make a trip to see your favourites. The Jack Murphy is now a pile of rubble. The Padres had left in 2003 and then the Chargers went north. A Stadium that hosted Super Bowls and World Series is no more. A franchise that has been one of the more mobile in it's his was our next port of call the following week - the Raiders. They started out in Oakland, had a 12 year spell in LA, went back to Oakland and I read have decamped to the deserts of Nevada. The surroundings were less friendly at the Los Angeles Coliseum, where the Raiders public seemed more interested in causing bother than beating the Kansas. It wasn't quite an English type football crowd, but it wasn't family friendly fun either. The LA Coliseum had

hosted the Olympics just a few years before, but was already looking shabby after the makeover for the Games. The Chiefs 27-24 victory gave the Raider public something to complain about! The Other Half decreed that we would avoid the Raiders in any future game plans! We headed to Australia in 1991 to check some Aussie Rules, so that was easier than it sounds.

There was still the matter of fitting in the "local" team into our sports plans at some point. We flew into Boston for "a couple of nights out" and a drive in the country. I had figured the autumn colours in New England might soften the blow of my next cunning plan. The New England Patriots just happened to be playing out at Foxboro the following day. These were the Patriots long before Tom Brady rocked in and turned them into regular Super Bowl winners. The 1992 Patriots were serial losers. They didn't buck the trend of their reputation and fell to a very dull 6-10 defeat to the visiting Seattle Seahawks. The Foxboro Stadium would be the home of the Patriots until 2002, when it fell victim to the bulldozer. We set off across

New England and upstate New York in search of more trees.

Cleveland came with some bad press in 1992. Today, I read Cleveland is all Rock n Roll and urban regeneration. The mood in the early 1990s was very different. It seemed commonly referred to as the "Mistake on the Lake" from elsewhere in the country. The population had fallen by nearly a half since a peak around 1950. High crime. High unemployment. Few in the way of attractions. A declining blue collar industrial city with steelworks missing in action. We would be right at home here. The 1992 season kicked off with high hopes for the Browns. The best line up since 1964? Quarterback, Bernie Kosar, represented an outside chance of leading the team to the business end of the play offs. The plan faltered somewhat in Week 2. Kosar broke his ankle. He would be still classed as walking wounded by our appearance in Week 4. Back up, Todd Philcox, led a potent offensive freescoring line at the Raiders in Week 3. He broke a finger and was added to the casualty list. The experienced Mike Tomczak - former Bear - signed on, so all was not

lost. A huge 78,000 packed in the somewhat crumbling Municipal Stadium. The Dawg Pound - the original raucous fan blocks that followed the Browns - were in good voice. Despite largely containing the ever smiling John Elway and preventing any Denver touchdowns, the Browns fired a total offensive blank. They recorded no points on the scoreboard. You couldn't make it up. How often does a NFL team not score even a field goal? Denver converted 4 field goals, as the game fizzled out to a 0-12 defeat. The Browns season eventually fizzled out too. The Municipal Stadium was demolished with the debris to become an underwater artificial reef in Lake Erie. It was late Sunday afternoon, but there was no time to waste. There was some mileage to cover. The Baltimore Orioles were expecting us the following evening.

I was undeterred by the low scoring disappointments of the previous season and I still had the industrial northern States on my horizon, when the 1993 season fixtures were announced. The codeshare arrangements of Northwest Airlines and KLM provided some interesting options to fly into the "gateway" airports at no extra charge, using Amsterdam as their hub in Europe. Which "gateway"

airports hosted a NFL team became a topic of interest to me. Anybody for Minneapolis? Detroit had first cropped up in my mind, whilst in Florida in early in 1992. I had been to a couple of baseball Spring Training events and discovered whilst reading the newspaper, that the Lions were holding some form of training facility at the Tampa Stadium. Head Coach, Wayne Fontes, was overseeing drills by his fringe players. 1989 Heisman Trophy Winner, Andre Ware, had struggled for game time since his draft and was effectively 3rd choice. In the Florida sunshine, he looked the part. Six months later, we found ourselves in the car park of the Pontiac Silverdome. Andre Ware would be starting quarterback against the Cardinals. Motor City it was fair to say needed a good makeover back then and I am sure it has had one since. We struck up a rapport with the couple in the next seats in the Silverdome and my new buddy talked me through all things Lions. Another Heisman Trophy winner, Barry Sanders, did the damage to the visiting Cardinals and Detroit ran out 26-20 winners in a victory more comfortable than the score suggested. The Pontiac Silverdome

became another victim of the wrecking ball and was finally demolished in 2018. There is a bit of a demolition theme going on with our previous destinations. The site is destined to be an Amazon distribution facility. Progress? Lions moved back downtown to Ford Field, so I guess the surrounding area is a lot more vibrant than it was in 1993.

We made our way to the airport immediately after the game en route to South West Florida. On the Hertz courtesy bus, we got talking to a guy about our plans - or more to the point, lack of them. I had a couple of fixed appointments - more American football, but other than that we were free spirits. "I have recommendation for you", our new friend advised and proceeded to write down a resort address in Naples. "Be sure to ask for ......, she will sort you a great rate. I will telephone her later today". We thought, why not and drove south towards Fort Myers and Naples on arrival in the Sunshine state. The Other Half was delighted with the gamble and Naples became our preferred beach community in South West Florida. There was a method

in my madness. It was kind of between the need to be in Tampa on the Sunday and Monday Night Football in Miami the day after. OK it was a bit much on the driving, but what are hire cars for? In a bizarre coincidence, we take up our seats at Tampa Stadium for the Detroit Lions visit the following Sunday. As with the Packers in Phoenix in 1990, the Lions fans had travelled south in numbers for the sun .... and who are we sat next to, but our friends from the Cardinals game in Detroit. What are the chances? It wasn't such a good day for Andre Ware. He had been dropped as starter. The Buccaneers shook off their loser status to shock play off chasing Detroit by 27-10. Barry Sanders could not do it all on his own!

I love the art deco buildings in Miami, but probably not much else about the place. A big crowd was at the Joe Robbie Stadium on a hot, sticky night to see Dan Marino at his efficient best. Somehow, it was much more fun being part of the Detroit away crew. We left Florida and headed north to

Minneapolis. The temperature declined somewhat. It was below freezing in the Twin Cities. I put a cassette - remember them - into the car player and drove around to the Twin Cities by Everything But The Girl. As the song said.....we were in Twin Cities, "Where the Mississippi rises and then falls, One is Minneapolis, And the other though less famous is St. Paul". It was so clean and nice. Like being in a big wide open version of Scandanavia. We were "standing in a city as pretty, as the ocean at night". The Other Half would also point out that Twin Cities boasted a 96 acre shopping centre. The Mall of America was not that long opened back in 1993 and featured indoor funfair and has a version of Sealife. Meanwhile at the spectacularly named Hubert H Humphrey Metrodome, the Bucaneers reverted to norm after their heroics against the Lions. The Minnesota Vikings showed some Scandi efficiency in their ruthless 15-0 win. The home city of Prince was a show of purple.

The Other Half was keen on a return to Naples the following year, so I conceded and continued with my Buccaneers phase. I was kind of thinking autumn trip starting in Cincinati would be quite nice or maybe Denver. If only. However, we were back in the old Tampa Stadium for the return of the Detroit Lions in 1994. It transpired to be another disappointing trip south for the Lions. There was no sign of seating buddies from last year. Part-timers. I am not averse to putting in the miles, but to be fair 460 miles to the next game was pushing it. Atlanta. Georgia. We were on the road with the Bucs again - this time to the Georgia Dome. As we found out the previous year, the Bucs don't travel as well we do. Back to back wins were beyond them. We retreated 620 miles to Naples and I amused myself at Friday night High School football. The Naples High Golden Eagles were looking to soar. They didn't!

Our trips to the US slowed after 1994 and my final forray to date into the American Football world was in 1999. A very competitive airfare saw us in the Pacific North West. Seattle - the city of Microsoft and coffee. The city of great seafood and more microbreweries than you could visit in a

week. The city of the Space Needle and the home of the aeroplane that had transported us there. It was supposed to rain a lot, but hey the Kingdome had a roof. We liked Seattle a lot. The Seahawks have the best helmet design in the NFL. They would be too good for the visiting Denver Broncos.

We sat in a brew pub across from the Kingdome. We had come a long way from those first trips. The American Football had been a great, if somewhat random way, to tour the country. It also opened up a world of basketball, baseball and hockey, but those programmes, press cuttings and memories are in a different box...a project for another day.

As for the Cleveland Browns, they avoided forced relocation to Baltimore and went into a 3 year hibernation. They have a new stadium and they still await the elusive Superbowl appearance. Meantime, a regular play off berth would be nice. One day!
