The drive to Cody was quite eventful. We had to drive through a canyon to get there...think of being on a roller coaster without being buckled in! I was sooo scared the ENTIRE time. The rational part of me knew we were totally safe, the irrational part of me wanted to crawl on the floor of the car until we were through the canyon! We decided to spend the night in Cody, WY which was 54 miles from the entrance to Yellowstone. We stopped in to the Buffalo Bill museum and they directed us to the Ponderosa campground (and here I thought it was just a restaurant!). We set up the tent and then headed off to the rodeo.... Cody is famous for their rodeos. At first I was hesitant to go...being the NY wimp that ... read more

We left Custer State Park, taking the Needles Scenic Highway Drive again, this time north. We drove up to Lead where we saw an open pit mine in the middle of the town. We drove through Deadwood which has a restored western town main street. Wild Bill Hickok was killed here in a saloon while playing poker. He is buried in Mt Moriah Cemetery. We then went to Sturgis to see where the motorcycles gather for bike week (we were there about a week after it ended) They were having a tractor parade on the main street - lucky us. We had lunch at Knuckles, a really cool biker’s bar. Then we headed for Wyoming. It has some rolling hills and we saw a couple of oil drilling machines and an open pit coal mine. It ... read more

Today is the first big driving day we attempted with our three kidlets. We have never driven 7 hours with them, and this will certainly set the stage for the other big drives we have coming on this trip. We got up early, determined to leave the campsite early, and actually left at 11 am. It was a cool 62 degrees driving today and Joe redistributed our weight between the camper and minivan, which made driving much more smooth and Joe’s anxiety about breaking down less. The kids did beautifully. I was so proud of them. They all stayed in their seats for the mostpart, and they were entertained by 2 movies, books, and lots of drawing. Our kids are currently hooked on Star Wars, and I think I will be able to recite much of ... read more

Not far out of Red Lodge you are quickly on The Beartooth Scenic Highway, which is without doubt very scenic. It reminds David of Trollstigen near Andalsnes in Norway, apart from the Fjords that is. The road’s a bit pock marked at high altitude but that’s a relatively minor quibble. We go over the top, across the plateau, over the Beartooth Pass, through Coulter Pass and Cooke City, and into Yellowstone National Park via the North East Entrance. Not much else to say, except it blows your mind for most of the journey and then there’s our return tour and split right over the Chief Joseph Scenic Highway to Cody. It’s just awesome all the way - providing the weather’s good of course - and it was! At Dead Indian Pass on the Chief Joseph Highway, ... read more

Today dawned partly sunny and beautiful. There was a definite chill in the air making us glad for our jackets and sweatshirts. Even though we would be in the van during the drive through the mountains I knew we'd be stopping for pictures often enough to warrant warm clothing. And stop we did! I got in the driver's seat first so Steve would be able to look around. It's also more comfortable for me to drive. While my injured body is doing so much better (I can feel the prayers, guys and gals. Thanks.) it's still hard for me to get in the van on the right (passenger) side. I can't draw my right leg up into the van and have to help it. It's much easier to get in on the left. Anyway, we ... read more

Our journey from the Black Hills to Yellowstone was quite a long one so it required a couple of stop-offs along the way. Our first night in Wyoming was in the small town of Buffalo. We stayed in a nice little cabin in the KOA campground there, had dinner out at the one local restaurant that was open on a Monday, and that was pretty much it. Our next night however, in Cody, Wyoming, was much more exciting… Cody likes to brand itself as a proper little Western town; it’s the former home of Western hero, Buffalo Bill Cody. Now there are museums and tours that you can take to learn about Cody’s past, but we were told that the best ways to truly experience the ‘Wild West’ Cody were to eat at the Irma Hotel ... read more
