I'm beginning to feel like this trip is 70% riding on the motorcoach and 30% actual seeing stuff. Okay, maybe that's an exageration, but it does feel like A LOT of time on the bus. Left Sheridan this morning at 8 am, drove from there to the Little Bighorn Battlefield. On the way, we watched the videos that are shown in the visitor's center so we wouldn't have to spend time there getting oriented. The battlefield itself looks like a big field of grass. With scattered white gravestones (and a few red ones). The National Monument is two separate sites, about 4 miles apart. One part is the Reno-Benteen battlefield and the other is "Last Stand Hill." I never knew that the battle was actually two different fights that far apart. Custer split up his forces ... read more

Shoshone Lodge - Yellowstone.

So today has been a long day on the bus.....8.5 hours in total so as you can imagine there isn't much to report & hard to bring in any humour! Everyone on the coach is finding the early rises a bit of a nightmare & not much of a holiday. Today bags had to be ready for 6.30am with the bus leaving for 7.30am - now does that sound like a holiday to you?? Being Day 6, it's now starting to become a bit of routine & have at last got over the tiredness of travelling. Although, I'm tired either through the heat or not actually doing very much. A typical day on a coach trip usually involves leaving very early, loo stop after 2 hours, then lunch 2 hours later, loo stop after another 2 ... read more

The drive out of Yellowstone to Cody was actually better than most of the drives within the park itself, it was just how we imagined USA to be like before we came here; tall red buttes over-shadowing the road giving you a feel of the old Wild West – we were driving towards the infamous town of Buffalo Bill Cody after all – time to don the cowboy hat again – ye ha!! We were glad to be couch-surfing again, this time with the Pollock family – Robin (who was away with work), Jim and their youngest daughter Jordan. We arrived late at night and they were very welcoming. We took a much needed shower to wash away the campfire smell and after a brief chat we both retired to an amazingly comfortable bed for a ... read more

We stopped in Cody on the way to Yellowstone. Very cool cowboy town in the middle of Wyoming. We checked out the Cody Nite Rodeo - They put on a rodeo 7 nights a week here!! Calf roping, barrel circling (or something), bucking bronco - w/ and w/o saddle, and then the bull riding. Didn't know if we would like it but it was really cool - except for the calves getting a rope slung around their neck as they ran for their life. They called all kids 12 and under down to the ring for a contest - who could pull a bandana off a calf's tail. Jack won! YEs - 12 and under. Yeah, Jack is 13. We aren't that good with mathe here. We are signing Danny Almonte up next year. Still having ... read more

Saturday, July 16th Today I left Custer State Park and headed to Spearfish Canyon. Took some pictures of the area and had a picnic lunch before heading to Wyoming to visit Devils Tower. (Note, Devils not Devil’s) There I took the hike around the base and it reminded me a lot of Uluru – First of all, huge monolith, but also that the native people have a large connection to the site. Throughout the month of June, climbers are discouraged from climbing the monument then, and there are lots of prayer ribbons and shawls along the trail. At Uluru it’s very similar, there are some places where you’re not to take photographs because of its spiritual significance, and you’re always asked not to climb it (but of course people do). So after all that, it was ... read more

Our original plan was to go into Canada. After second and third thoughts we decided to help the economy in the U.S. We headed SW into Cody, Wyoming. There are no membership parks here. Close to Yellowstone National Park, we try to blend in with tourists. Many of them are speaking another language, which tells you how much this country has to offer. The Buffalo Bill Cody Museum sells 2-day tickets as it takes that long to go through it. Tom kept wishing our friends Sandy and Bruce could have been with us as I had no appreciation of the mega gun collection on display....one whole wing of the museum Bruce! We also spent one afternoon at Old Trail Town. This town had a saloon used by the "Hole in the Wall Gang." It also had ... read more

I spent most of my time today in the museum many call the Smithsonian of the West, the Buffalo Bill Historic Center. It is a complex of five museums, all related to the west in one form or another. The museums cover Buffalo Bill, the natural history of Yellowstone, plains Indians, western art, and firearms. All of them are through and engaging. Buffalo Bill Cody The complex was originally founded to honor Buffalo Bill Cody, with a museum on his life. He was born in Iowa in 1846 and grew up in Kansas. As a teenager, he may have ridden for the Pony Express (see ). During the Civil War, he joined the Union Army as a scout. Afterward, he worked for several railroads, hunting and supplying buffa... read more
