We left Pittsburgh and started our trek south. The most significant weather factor was rain, rain, and more rain. Our first stop was Pipestem Resort State Park in West Virginia. We were the only campers. January 6, 2005, Thursday.
After scouting the park, it was decided that Pipestem had good reason to be called a resort. The facilities included horseback riding, golf course, tennis, two lodges, and even a cable car to bring folks down the canyon to the second lodge. A stop at the nature-center, sent us the County Line Trail for a hike out to Indian Branch Falls. Quite pretty with bits of ice breaking up, the tail included lots of ups and downs and was about 2.7 miles each way.
After lunch we drove and checked out the cottages. It was nice with potential for another trip with some friends. Our second hike today was the Lake Shore Trail, 2.2 miles each way. All in all we hiked close to 10 miles, weather mild with drizzle on and off. January 7, 2005, Friday.
We are on our way to visit Bob’s daughter and her family. We detoured a bit to
visit Damascus, GA where the AT comes through. At a local bike shop we got info on the VA Creeper Trail. We tried to get to the highpoint in VA but…it just didn’t work out this time.
On to Huntersville we go for a delightful visit with the Honerkamps.
