22nd may Washington DC day 13
After a very long snooze, Richard and I got up from the tiny, musty, non English speaking filled room of 8, gathered our standard tourist kit (camera, phone, sunglasses, video camcorder) and headed to get some grub. And of course it was again the hard choice between the ever famous McDonalds or subway. After a long discussion subway it was. Our subway experience was pretty average with nothing really to tell apart from that some American bloke didn't understand the words "yes I'm in here" or "this is taken" in a variety of different tones, pitches and volumes. You may have guessed, some guy got a good look at me mid wipe. Hazzar. Luckily for us, our hostel was within a 30minute walk of all the main touristy attractions. First on the list was the White House and the search for Obama. Unfortunately we got told he was in Chicago that day. What a let down. Did he not know I was coming to see him. Either way I tweeted him letting him know he was a let down. I'm sure he feels bad now. As you may of read I am the kind
of person who will go see something, find it interesting/cool and all but not the type of person that needs to stand and gorp at it for ages (rich). He insists on getting every angle of the said monument, then every angle of him with the corresponding angle of the building. And of course the time for him to do his hair. You would of thought his hairspray would keep that in place. Yes he uses hairspray which really baffles me. The only other people I know to use this is my mum before she goes to work, and my sisters before they go out on the town. Not a 21 year old lad who's going to see the white house and the Lincoln memorial. As you may have been able to tell I was getting ready to move onto the next monument and/or punch rich in the throat. We headed over to the Lincoln memorial, a short 5 minute walk away to find that the beautiful, magnificent reflecting pool around it was under construction. You should of seen riches face. Flights to USA -£600. 3 nights in Washington hostel - $75. Riches face when he couldn't get his perfect picture taken- priceless. It was karma in my opinion. He had been a camera whore the whole holiday and this was god telling him to cut it down a bit. He still took a million photos of it anyway. So we walked a long this construction pool only to look upon the Lincoln memorial. Up the steps we went and there the big lad was. I had been to Washington before 4 years earlier and seen it all but this time i don't know for what reason but he seemed a lot bigger and epic. You know the drill, photos galore and then we went off to see the Martin Luther King Jr memorial. As far as memorials go, it was pretty standard. A lot of marbled areas, a big statue and of course for this memorial all his famous quotes. After the pictures we headed to the holocaust museum. I was happy to go here. Not because I am sick in the head but because as soon as we walked through the door it was announced no photos are allowed to be taken. Rich was sad, and of course in his misery comes my joy. We walked in and asked how much the tickets would be to get through. She said, like a lot of people words to this affect "o my gawd, I love your accent........where you from ........." all the generic English accent babble. She then proceeded to give us free tickets to get in. This was a nice gesture from her and we appreciated it greatly. And we let her know our appreciation gladly. Which made it funny when me and rich walked off to find the tickets were only $1. We thought she had saved us $30 dollars each or so. Even so, it was nice of her. The museum really emphasised the magnitude of what happened and how devastating it was. I won't go into it as words can't how it makes you feel going round. It was definitely worth while going and a real eye opener. We headed back to the hostel, our dirty little room to where we would awkwardly smile and nob our heads to the Chinese guys all on the laptops. I had a quick shower, got my clothes on and was ready to get pre drinking for town. Rich had an attempted convosation with one of our roomies, a long shower, and a good 30 mins dedicated hair spray, gel and moisturiser time slot. Leaving me in the social area waiting on my own, with a big bottle of vodka, sprite and mountain dew. Once all products applied we went into the kitchen, swallowed our pride and asked the 3 Germans at the table if we could join them. They said yes and we got chatting to them. 2 were a couple travelling and the other travelling alone. Not long after sitting down rich whispered in my ear "should we tell them where we had been today? Or would that be awkward". I swiftly explained the difference between Germans and Nazis. We went on to introduce some drinking games to them such as "cross the bus" and "***k the dealer". After a while a long came a guy from Chicago who was in town on business. Must of been 35ish. In our infinite wisdom we convinced him to sit down get drinking and head into town with 2 English lads and a German girl. What a combination. We were like a misfit squad hitting town. Town was pretty dead, just a few bars with the locals in. So after a lot of drinking and asking everyone we could find anywhere that was still open/somewhere with a dance floor, they pointed is the direction of, from what I could make it out to be a traditional American jazz bar. They had a jazz band on so me and rich hit the dance floor with our new best friends and boogied for a while. The band were very good and closed with a classic MJ song "I'll be there". Me in my drunk frame of mind, stood 2 ft in front of the lead singer and joined in as part of the band. No dancing, just singing at the top of my voice thinking I was doing MJ proud. To this day I think this. Im sure everyone around me thought this too. Selected videos and photos can be seen here. You may need to add me as a friend on google +.
