After posting yesterday M+D drove us to the Boeing complex. Describing it as huge would not be an apt description. Massive might satisfy. It is an airplane assembly building and is the largest building in the world by volume (0.4sq km) and is where the wide-body Boeing 747, 767, 777 and 787 are assembled. It employs over 30,000 people, including its own fire department, security team, daycare and fitness centre. However, the highlight of last evening was going to Mukilteo Lighthouse area to … buy … an ice-cream … made the most of it! As we enjoyed our ice-creams we walked around the beautiful area taking in the returning ferry from Whidbey Island, situated in Puget Sound. Back home, it was a movie, “Snowman”, before bed. We caught the ferry to Whidbey Island and drove to ... read more

Our last day at Whidby Island and the sun finally decided to come out. It was a balmy 66 degrees and a real heat wave for us… Joe and I were able to get the bikes out and go for a 4 mile ride. Towards the end of the ride I was almost dive bombed by a bald eagle being chased by another huge bird. The eagle was so close to me I had to stop riding and just watch him fly. It was simply amazing. Joe took a great picture of one of the eagles who lands in the tree right by our camp. Tomorrow we are off to Canada. We plan to take about three weeks to get to Alaska.... read more

Joe and I took off today on our own to run errands in the city. A piece off our sway bar broke so it was off to Camping World. I sure hope they have Camping Worlds in Canada. We drove WA Hwy 20 over to Burlington and went over the Deception Bridge. The view from what we figured was about 200 feet above the water was spectacular. We met up with Ron and Caroline, so all parties going to Alaska have now united. One more day in the good old USA. Tomorrow we will be getting things ready for the next three weeks traveling up the Alcan. One sighting today at sunset was a huge bald eagle. He just stood on the top of the tree looking like he owned the world.... read more

We made it to Whidby Island and have a wonderful view of Puget Sound. Now if the sun would come out it would be even more beautiful. The weather forecast says the sun should come out tomorrow. We are ALL crossing our fingers. Thanks Bill for the great suggestion to stay here. You forgot to tell us about the planes that fly all day.. At least we know we will be protected by the Navy....... read more

This afternoon we enjoyed a great hike at Deception Pass Bridge and West Beach on Whidbey Island. We arrived intending on staying for a bit, perhaps walking to the beach and then heading back into La Conner for some dessert. However, we ended up walking along the beach all the way to West Beach . Skipping rocks, climbing rock walls, finding logs to sit on and walk along and enjoying the wildlife and sun kept us at a slow and somewhat steady pace. We were visited by a couple of seals as well as an eagle along the way. After some time we decided to get a couple of group pics and head for the cars. A quicker return pace saw us arrive about an hour after our planned return, but better for the experience. I ... read more

PUGET SOUND, WASHINGTON STATE So many islands, so little time. We spent several glorious days criss-crossing the Puget Sound. Glorious, not only because of the beautiful scenery, but also because we had bright, clear and sunny weather. All of the locals told us that this was unusual weather and not the norm. So, all around us, everyone was revelling in the warmth. From Port Orchard, we gazed across the azure bay toward the Navy Yards of Bremerton. Still full of Battleships, Air Craft Carriers and all manner of Frigates and Patrol Ships, the area probably still looks the same as when my parents lived there in the 50's. My father was a young Army Lieutenant in charge of the Port Orchard Battery. They lived in downtown Port Orchard and also in the neighboring waterfront town of ... read more

Have had a GREAT time here on Whidbey Island. It started off with a drive off the island up to Bellingham. I had a nice visit and shared a meal with my cousin Danny's daughter Mary. We took a walking and diving tour of town after dinner. The weather really cooperated for our iPhone photo workshop. Initially they were calling for rain all weekend. Fortunately they were wrong. We only had a little drizzle Monday but were in class all day today. Beautiful sunrise and sunset the days we were out in the field photographing. Today (Tuesday) I'm having a little work done on the Jeep before heading down to Seattle for dinner with a group of iPhoneography Facebook friends. Then I'll start working down to Napa Valley, CA and on to Yosemite NP. Hope you ... read more

My mother and I took a road trip to the Pacific Northwest in May of 2008. One of our stops was Whidbey Island and beautiful Deception Pass. Photos of our stop here are attached. Coming up in future blogs: A Colorado cornucopia; America's Best Idea; Dyer, IN; Big Sur, CA.... read more

Woke up this morning, anxious to start my trip, looked out the window and IT WAS RAINING! IN AUGUST! Groan! Had to put the top up on the Miata before I even started the trip. Hit the road heading for Whidbey Island with the intention of taking back roads all the way (no I-5). About one hour into my trip it stopped raining (yea!) so I immediately pulled over and flipped the top down (I felt much better!). Drove on Forest Service roads through the Gifford Pinchot National Forest on the east side of Mt. St. Helens and came across a temporary bridge where a MASSIVE washout had occurred, apparently in 2008. The temporary bridge was installed earlier this year and just opened in July. I found this news item in The Columbian's web site: "The ... read more

... read more
