Home, Sweet Home. Queen sized bed, with a really comfy mattress, no mosquito net, and family to welcome me! So "today" which was really 2 days started with waking up in Kigali: We all were up early, showered and had an early breakfast to get out the door by just after 8 to get to the Dream Center chapel by 8:30. Oh yea, the guest house offers 2 tyopes of showers: 1) Bucket Shower (previously described); 2) Military Shower (Get wet, turn off water, soap up, rinse off) After a shower I had some time to look at email before my last Rwandan breakfast. We then went to Africa New Life's Dream Center for worship. It was amazing to see people sing and dance during the worship. The singing was in English as was the sermon. ... read more

After celebrating Friday the 13th. twice and arriving 4 hours earlier than we left. We have arrived safely home. Kudos to Maggie our farm sitter for such a wonderful job and to our friends that handled a farm emergency that happened. We arrived to a normal happy farm and critters. It is a wonderful feeling that we could go on a vacation of our life time and have so many friends and family willing an able to take care of us and our farm. Thank You too all of you that kept in touch and followed our travels. All our love and thanks, Ken & Laura... read more

It rained all day on Saturday which made it tough to get things done before our trip. I guess this was testing us for the spring in New Zealand. ... read more

D-day (departure day) is tomorrow and I'm trying to cram all my stuff in the Miata. It's obvious at this point that it would be virtually impossible for two people to do this trip in a Miata (unless you pulled a trailer). I decided that I wanted a "no fuss" haircut for this trip and ended up with a "buzz cut". When I was 25 (and had shoulder-length hair), if I could have looked into the future and seen this haircut, I would have been very disappointed in my future-self. Funny how things change. Tomorrow I'm taking the back roads (avoiding the I-5 freeway) to Whidbey Island where I'll be staying with friends. More later! Jack ... read more

The goal: Travel to Alaska (solo) from Vancouver, Washington (and back again) in my 1999 Miata; just for the adventure! The Miata is clearly not an ideal vehicle for this journey, but I've always enjoyed driving the car on the open road and I believe that the entire trip will be more open/vivid/scenic/interesting from the perspective of a convertible sports car (top down whenever possible!). The general plan is to drive "about" 300 miles daily, allowing time to stop and take in the sights. I'll spend most of the journey in Canada (British Columbia and Yukon Territory) and about a week in Alaska. To prepare the Miata, I've installed a radiator grill (to protect the radiator from rocks), installed plastic headlight protectors and a bra (I hate car bras but I'm hoping that this thing will ... read more

We had a nice, lowkey 4th of July weekend. We drove down the morning of the 3rd and met my parents, sister, brother-in-law, niece and nephew at Yale Lake (about thirty min away from La Center) for a day of sunshine, boating, food, napping, laughter, and of course-- good conversation. It was glorious. We spent Saturday in the Portland area, first watching my dad march with one of his community bands in a 4th of July parade (Amelia got about five million pieces of candy from everyone throwing it...lucky girl) and then just enjoying some more laidback family time at the Stabler's house. That evening, Martin, my parents and I went out to dinner and to see the movie 'Up', the newest Pixar creation. If you haven't seen it yet, GO! It's an amazing movie, one ... read more

Whew! Day 1 complete! We couldn’t have gotten out of our driveway and street without the help of the snow angels God sent us! PRAISE THE LORD! The kids helped get the icicles off Spirit and our good friend Mike snowplowed around the RV and driveway so we had a clear launch pad. Our first turn out of the driveway North and we got stuck in all the massive snow in the road. But Captain Geoff knew what to do! Back and forth, back and forth, back and forth… Then we hear from above the cab, “I can still see our house!” Yes, Kai. Thank you, we know. The wheels finally found good traction and we’re off! Oh - but right before we left, our neighbor brought us some goodies and told us how much fun ... read more

OK. The photo of Mt. Hood is not really of the state of Washington (it’s in Oregon, just east of Portland), but I did go to Washington for the first time shortly after this photo was taken. If you’re up on the national news, you may have caught the fact that there have been a few fires out west this season. So far, Oregon and Washington have not seen too much, but northern California was hit pretty bad late in June and early in July. From the plane, Mt. Hood appeared to be floating in the mist - the smoke from the fires shrouded the mountain in a haze, which just after sunset gave the mountain a surreal look. Getting back to the state of Washington, check state number 48 off the list. I’m missing only ... read more

So we leave a week from tomorrow! I have bought pretty much everything I need (probably MORE than I need!) for the trip..except for a few loose ends that I will get in the next week. It hasnt't really hit me yet that I am really going to Central America! This has been a dream of mine for so long and I am so excited to experience everything that the area has to offer. Wish us luck! ... read more
