Friday and Saturday were spent enjoying Seattle and reconnecting with old friends. After a leisurely breakfast, we headed out to Pikes Market and the waterfront. Pike’s Market was extremely crowded as the summer vacationers were out in force. The flower stalls were colorful and the fish were flying. From Pike’s we walked down Post Alley to the waterfront. At the top of Post Alley is the not-so-famous Gum Wall. I’m not sure where or when the tradition started, but you haven’t been in downtown Seattle until you chew a piece of gum and stick it to the side of the brick building. Some call it art, others Don’t. We strolled along the waterfront and made our way to Ivar’s for clam chowder. Besides Salty’s, Seattle’s best seafood can be found at Ivar’s and Elliott’s on the ... read more

Having spoken to Stuart he said I had to see Seattle so I found a return bus ride for $60 a pretty reasonable price for a 4hr journey. The only problem being that it meant crossing the Canada-US border. There was only about 15 of us on the bus and took about 20minutes. The border police do love you to endlessly fill out forms, i also got my photo and fingerprints taken. I arrived in Seattle at 7pm. The bus dropped me off right next to the Space Needle which looked really cool at night. I got in a taxi to my hostel, the driver was from Nigeria and didnt know directions or really anything about the city, he was friendly though and stopped running the meter when we were lost on the one-way streets. I ... read more

Day 2 was awesome. We started at the Brouwers. An apparently world renound brew pup featuring 60 different beers on tap, 3 nitro, and 3 cask conditioned beer. I started with a black cherry stout that was excellent, but blew the tap so no mor fo u pretty lady. Pete had the Boundary Bay Oak Aged Cabin fever. My next was the Elysian Haleakala Sour. I love sour beer. This was ok. Not really all that sour for my liking but good all the same. Pete finished up with the Red Hook Tripel. It just so happened last weekend was the Washington Beer Fest, so they were featuring Washing state brewers. Fun place and the people were nice. I loved the bar. Sort of medieval cave like. Appropriate for Halloween. Our next stop was the best ... read more

Although this blog starts in Northern California the majority of it is based on my experiences in Seattle. There is so much to do there. The pioneers who made it across the continent were a wild bunch....women and men alike. They were so determined to "make a go of it." Hats off to them! Unfortunately after three lovely sunny days at Klamath River the clouds rolled in and a fine drizzle, alternated with pouring rain for the remainder of my week there! I did manage to visit other coastal towns and see some of the huge trees in the surrounding redwood forests. The campground was about three miles from an overlook where I watched grey whales (rain or shine.) The one day there must’ve been six feeding there. I guess the river inlet churns up the ... read more

"She's dead. Wrapped in plastic." More on that later. The Empire Builder rolled into Seattle after 48 hours of travel across 5 states, with the scenery changing from industrial wasteland to grassy farmland to cold, harsh, snow covered mountains to turquoise valleys. It was incredible just sitting in the observation car and watching the land change. Seattle was much better than I expected it to be - so much so that I ended up with an extra couple of days there. My original plan had been to spend a day prowling the Pike St Market, a day in Snoqualmie and then leave the next day. In Chicago I added an extra day and then when I reached Seattle I added one more, giving me a bit more time to explore. My arrival was somewhat more relaxed ... read more

San Francisco was instantly likable. We have found that with many of the cities we have been too, the opinion we form on what we see initially is generally the lasting one. Our route into the city took us over the Golden Gate Bridge, which we would explore in more detail later. The bridge sits at the entrance of the bay area, a natural harbour that is the largest on the West Coast. The city looked beautiful from this distance, bathing in the afternoon Californian sun, creating a bright symphony of colour combining orange, blue and white. The days of our rifling through our coupon booklet for motels and doing daily rounds of the best choices were over for now. The motel network is enormous and reaches every remote corner of the country with great value ... read more

Hi everyone Well Im safely back in Victoria after a brief (48hours) visit to Seattle. We took a very leaving late afternoon on Monday and arrived middle of the evening. We found our hotel and checked in and then went out for a bite to eat. The city was cold and mostly foggy, like much of the Pacific Northwest (that I've seen anyway). We checked out the trade centre (where the WTO riots of 1999 were centered). We went to sleep around midnight and then got up a few hours later to get ready to go out for Obama partying. We arrived early (to the Paramount theatre where there was live tv coverage of DC's events) and the line was only 100m long or so, 30 minutes later the line streched all the way around a ... read more

Great Architecture We had a really interesting if somewhat strange visit to the Seattle Public library. The library is an iconic building of architectural note. It is popular and attracts a lot of visitors. It is one of those buildings that demands a strong reaction and I expect there are aspects of it that some people love that others hate. Unfortunately the nature of the visit we were offered meant we learnt very little about how the service is delivered. We did not meet a single person who was involved in running the service. Our observation of front line customer service was not favourable although that could have just been the person on duty at the time of our visit. Seemed to me that Seattle Public library may need to think about how welcoming it is ... read more
