Today was a great day. I thought my phone was dying from getting wet but it wasn't. I found a Verizon store not too far away and they checked it all out and said "No, the wet indicator was not saying it got wet. It just needed a signal and several updates and a charge. They took care of all that and me in the process. I felt SO out of touch without my phone, now I'm back in business. On the way to the phone store I spotted a mountain off to my right and wondered which one it was. I knew Portland had Mt Hood, Seattle has Mt Rainier, so what is this one? It turns out it's Mt Baker, seems to be just as tall and dramatic as the other 2, I couldn't ... read more

Filling in the blanks a little. My sister asked a question why they call Deception Pass just that and I couldn't look it up on the internet because I didn't have any. Here is the explanation. In the spring of 1792, Joseph Whidbey, master of HMS Discovery and Captain Vancouver's chief navigator proved that it was not really a small bay as charted by the Spaniards (hence the name "Deception"), but a deep and turbulent channel that connects theStrait of Juan de Fuca with the Saratoga Passage, which separates the mainland from what the... read more

15 Leavenworth, WA to La Conner, WA The day was brighter and clearer than it had been the last 2 days. The wind was blowing in another direction so the smoke was not here today. The campground seems deserted as a lot of the campers have gone home. There were many young families here and they probably had to get back to work and maybe even school. There were several empty campsites where there had been none just a few days ago. I got things packed up and was on the road by 10:30 but didn't go far. Just down the very windy road there was construction and traffic was stopped. I turned off the engine and just listened to the birds. It was a good 15 min before I saw the pilot car followed by ... read more

It was in the back of everyone's mind at the welcome dinner the evening prior, though nobody dared mention it. The rain was pouring on Saturday, and we were going to drag our poor international guests across Puget Sound and to an exposed shorefront park in this weather? We might as well have rebooked their flight home for Monday morning! We woke up to a brilliant surprise however... Sun! Our biggest concern turned out to be sun burn. We met at the Anacortes Ferry Terminal at a quarter to nine, or thereabouts, and proceeded to fill the diminutive walk on waiting area with rambunctious students primed for a day of adventure. This would be a harbinger of things to come for our fellow passengers on the state ferry Kaleetan. We made our presence felt on board ... read more

So much to share! I have been without a computer for a bit, so the stories, adventures, insights have accumulated beyond the capacity to share them all. There are many pictures that in reality may tell the best parts anyway, so look to the pictures to understand the essence of the last few weeks. There has been lots of laughter, happiness, joy and personal insight. (to say the least) The sequence of events/travel goes like this: Vancouver to Vancouver Island and Victoria. Victoria up to Courtenay, Campbell River, and Cortes Island. Journeyed back down to Victoria to take the Clipper ferry to Seattle to meet up with Mom and Sandy. The three of us stayed in Seattle, went up to Vancouver, and back to Seattle. Then, they left and I headed out to Whidbey Island to ... read more

Oh dear, my love for Montana has found a rival, Washington State’s northern islands close to the border to Canada: San Juan Islands. One of the best campgrounds I’ve ever stayed at. Right on the beach, each camp had its separate terrace and hardly anyone around. These islands seem to be the playground for the rich and famous. The town of Friday Harbor is so pretty and clean I dared not walk on its bitumen. Just kidding, but sort of true. I drove around the island (tiny) and most of the coastline is private property,’ no trespassing’ signs everywhere. Bit shocking really and I snooped around the houses a bit from the beach with my binoculars. Jeez, they had helipads and some of their fronts where only glass … money dripping from the ceiling. I talked ... read more

This is a trip we took back in March this year. Just a mini-vacation of 3 days at Orcas Island. We drove north to catch the ferry at Anacortes. We were lucky that the weather turned out to be kind to us even though the forecast didn't expect much from it that weekend. Having been to both the NE and the NW of the country, I guess I can say that both are fairly similar in terms of unpredicatable weather. It seems more true to the NW area in late spring. I can't say much more than this because I haven't been back that long. We spent most of our time on the eastern side of the island mostly because I wanted to get away from the area with higher concentration of tourists; though it was ... read more

Portland came and went! It's beautiful and green! We seem to be taking the sun every place we go. But not in Portland! It was nice to see overcast! The people are really nice and super laid back! There are all types of people in Portland. For example when we were driving through Astoria we saw a young girl with bright purple hair on her bright green bike....then walking behind her was an older lady with long hair weird looking parachute pants and baggy shirt "earthy grandma" haha.... We spent some time with good friends. The congregation there was very refreshing and warm. We did little sight seeing...but mostly relaxed and sipped on our coffee! =)... read more

We've traveled about 3,500 miles so far of the 10,000 that we anticipate going. Ron figured out how to add a map to our entry. If you click 'fit route' on the map it will show our trip so far. This entry will be lots of pictures so be sure to scroll past the map. Right now our camper is parked next to two enormous pines at Deception Pass State Park. We'll be here total of 8 nights - a very long lay over for us right now. It will be nice to slow down a bit. The park is on Whidbey Island, north of Seattle. This park is so picturesque, it is like camping in a postcard. Towering pine trees, ferns, huge boulders. I don't think pictures will do it justice. This is the most ... read more

After an uneventful drive from Seattle to Anacortes, we took the ferry to Orcas Island in the San Juan Islands. The skies got increasingly gloomy during the hour and a half ride. After docking in Orcas Village, we drove up the left “lobe” of the island to the larger town of East Sound. We were surprised by the variety of micro-environments we passed through during the less than 30 minute drive: rocky coast, rain forests, fishing villages, agricultural valleys, tree studded mountains. It’s as though Orcas Island is a complete world packed into a very small area. After lunch and grocery shopping in East Sound, we headed on to the vacation home of our friends Bob and Wendy Lucas from San Luis Obispo. The Lucases were in residence, but had taken a brief trip over to ... read more
