This year's trip, our third time in China, will start with a few days in Beijing, then to Chongqing for the marriage celebration of our son, Jacob, and daughter-in-law, Lynn, then to southern Yunnan to see where Pu'er tea comes from and to visit the semi-tropical area close to the Burmese border, and finally back through Chongqing to Beijing and home. Our good friends Karen and Jim from San Juan Island will be travelling with us for their first visit to China and the first major expedition of their retirement years. The initial few days in Beijing will be a test of our China savvy as we try to show Karen and Jim the sights without the benefit of Jacob as our guide and interpreter. The reception in Chongqing, with lots of Lynn's extended family members ... read more

We got a late start out town this morning and made a quick stop at my uncles in Portland. We hit the road and made it through Portland with no problems; we missed rush hour! It was a beautiful day out. The weather was calling for rain, but when I got up this morning and checked the report it showed sunny all week. We couldn’t ask for better weather. Once in Washington, we made our way to Bellevue to have some dinner at the Cheesecake Factory. After dinner we shopped around at the mall and then headed north. I wanted Megan to see Lake Washington and the bridge across the water. She thought it was pretty cool. We have to be up at 5am to make our 8:30am ferry to Sidney, BC. I believe we have ... read more

Forty of us caught the Talgo (European) Amtrak train from Seattle to Bellingham on April 8, 2010 with Alki Tours. It was a cloudy day, but the cumulus clouds promised spring was coming. We zoomed past the Edmonds Ferry Terminal and the Everett Naval Base, through fields of hops and cabbage, and stopped briefly in Mount Vernon. Our destination was Bellingham where we arrived an hour later and explored the Cruise Terminal in Old Town Fairhaven. Our driver, Ariel, had our motor coach waiting for us and off we went to brunch at Chuckanut Manor. Our coach was too large to negotiate the curves of Chuckanut Drive, so we took I-5 to the Bow Hill exit, drove through Blanchard, and turned right onto Chuckanut Drive. Chuckanut Manor Bed and Breakfast is owned and operated by Pat ... read more

The Mount Vernon police department gave us all a tour that we won't soon forget. I was most impressed by all the different experiences that they gave the kids; both American and German. I think that the tour was very understandable and thorough! Thanks to our tour leaders and thanks to the kids for being such great listeners! ... read more

Did you ever watch the Wizard of Oz and in that scene where Dorothy et al are running through the endless red poppy fields trying to reach the Emerald City think "I wish I could do that!" Same here! Well we finally made it to the tulip festival (fittingly, a few hours north of Seattle, our own "Emerald City"). I've been wanting to visit the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival with Andras for years. Not only does the area transform into a photographers dream, but acres upon acres of wildly colored flower fields cannot manifest any feelings other than happiness. Last year the rare April snow delayed the bloom and our work schedules prevented us from leaving the city and this year the weather almost threatened to do the same thing, but during the last few days ... read more

Great Freakin Trip Looking back on my six weeks in Southeast Asia, I've gotta say it was pretty awesome. To me Thailand felt like a giant playground for Westerners. Anything you want to do, diving, trekking, elephant riding, relaxing on tropical beaches, getting foot massages, anything, you can do, and cheap. I had a really fun time and I once again broadened my view of the world that I--and over 6 billion other people--try and scratch a meaningful existence on. I saw how people outside of the first world live, I walked among the amazing landscapes, I mixed with and befriended other foreign travelers, and I lived experiences that I will look back on for the rest of my life. There was so much more that I did than I could even begin to describe ... read more

Skagit Valley Tulip Festival 2007 North America » United States » Washington » Mount Vernon By carnellesApril 14th 2007EricOn a whim, took the drive up to Skagit Valley today. It rained on the way up. Lunch stop at Porterhouse in Mount Vernon, and voila, sunshine. The tulips were beautiful, probably at their peak this weekend. It was the first time either my Mom or I had been up there for the festival. Stopped at Deception Pass on the way back (and of course encountered more rain on the way back). These are just a couple of the pictures (they... read more

I wish packing wasn't so hard to do. Packing shines a light on almost all of the bad qualities that exist in Lizzz. Such as procrastination and disorganization. When I pack I get so overwhelmed that all of a sudden the smallest tasks are unsurmountable. For the life of me I could not do simple things like throw out small nearly empty bottles of lotion and holey socks with no friend and when forced to make a choice of throwing these things away or keeping them I buckle and tearfuly toss them in with everything else that I should throw away but wont....because honestly, asking me to make choices like that is asking too much. Yesterday I moved out of Olympia, Washington. For about a half hour almost all of my most loved lovies stood outside ... read more
