…the LAST day on the road. Our epic road trip has come to an end. The drive home was uneventful, save for all the smoke. It was still smoky this morning, we couldn’t see Lake Coeur d’Alene as we drove by it and the bridge crossing the Columbia River into Vantage was shrouded in the haze. Keechelus Lake, on I-90 east of Snoqualmie Pass, was dry due to the extremely mild winter. I’ve never seen it without water. I wasn’t even sure it was Keechelus Lake as we drove by it, but all the construction that’s been going on there for the past few years confirmed it. The thing that struck me the most about coming home was seeing all the Washington license plates. After two months of rarely seeing a Washington plate and getting excited ... read more

We're two weeks away from embarking on our first extended vacation and we've already hit a roadblock. We've discovered that leaving on a Saturday doesn't bode well for making campground reservations. Imagine that! By postponing our departure 24 hours the probability of making a reservation increases dramatically. Realizing this (with a slap to the forehead) we anticipate spending our weekend nights in various parking lots across the country. The extra day at home will give us more time to make the necessary repairs we (I) have been putting off (re-sealing the top edge of the shower stall because my first attempt failed). It will also give us more time to forget to pack something.... read more

After reluctantly leaving the Oregon coast we headed through Eugene and turned North to Ft. Lewis, Washington where I did Basic back in the Fall of 1971. While the post has changed dramatically the vibe is still the same. Uniformed men and women joined together to train physically and mentally for whatever the world throws at them. The military today is far more professional than the one I was a member of back in the Vietnam era. It is a joy to watch these young people at work. Karen and I were lucky enough to find a spot to stay on post at the Mt. Ranier Inn. After a solid night's sleep we worked out at the Ft. Lewis gym. Even at 0600 hrs the place was jumping. It is the largest indoor physical training facility ... read more

So when I felt a calling to just go out on a limb and take the journey I am about to enter, there were a lot of fears. After all, at that time, I was preparing myself for the next step on the job market through a recruiting firm that works specifically with military officers. My career marketing skills were being sharpened so that I would leave the Navy and make a smooth transition into the corporate world. As a matter of fact, at this moment, I would be at a career conference in North Carolina. I was also flirting with the idea of teaching and coaching and at one point before then, considering law school (indecisiveness has always a weakness for me!) Heck, even now, I sometimes it is tempting to just abandon my tramping ... read more

Parenting is fun, but sometimes co-parenting with an ex isn't so much. So my fun-filled summer with my two kids, Jordan and Taylor, is now over. Getting out of my comfort zone and playing single-dad made for one of my most memorable experiences. Erin came back to claim them, so I said my goodbyes and let them be so that they could start their new year at school and walked back into my suddenly quiet house. But before they left Washington, Erin called me with a question about a toy and turned it into a release of hatred she has built up in herself for me. Needless to say, if her objective was to "make me" feel lousy, it worked. At first, I limped away feeling like an inadequate father. On top of that, this happened ... read more

So I know what some might think reading my very first blog on TB ever: "Why would he tell everyone such a personal and potentially embarrasing story?" Some of you think I may want you to feel sorry for me. Others may feel I am just begging for attention. In my world, those motives get you nowhere. As I stated in a previous blog, last spring a Navy psychiatrist finally diagnosed me with Bipolar I Disorder. There are quite a number of misconceptions about this so-called "impairment" so I want to share more about it. First, BPD is a mood disorder and is far different than a personality disorder. A mood disorder deals with disturbances in someone's mood no matter what kind of person they are. In the case of BPD, the moods cycle over time ... read more

Have a busy day today and tomorrow with last minute chores and things to remember to pack. I am beyond excited and am just trying to contain myself long enough to remember everything I have to do. Hurricane Tomas will not be headed to San Juan, Puerto Rico...which is where we are flying into and setting sail from. Thank you Mother Nature! So with that I better get off this computer and get a move on! Have a great day! :o)... read more
