blog 09-24-17 Tall Ship Revisit
It's our last day here in Long Beach, WA and there are some chores that have to be done. Food shopping, laundry and a last trip to the beach for the boys.
First on the list however is a revisit to Ilwaco Harbor to climb aboard one of those tall ships. We had the dogs with us yesterday and it just wasn't possible to climb aboard dragging a petrified dog and enjoy the experience. So after their walk around the campground we left them at home and Ginnie and I went to the harbor. It was a beautiful morning with plenty of sunshine and the temps quickly warming to shirtsleeve weather. There was only one ship in the harbor so I didn't have a choice as to which ship I would visit, The Lady Washington won. She was tied up all the way at the end of the dock so it was a long walk on a floating couple of boards. There were not the crowds of yesterday so we got right on and began looking around and asking questions of the crew who were very eager to help. We went below deck to
the galley where a meal was being prepared, also serves as a meeting room and mess hall.
The bunks were off limits but we looked from above at the very cramped quarters for 6 sailers, there were 12 on board, don't know where the rest go. It's very small but efficient, like our motorhome, and the crew seems to love it. Pictures
We stopped at the fish market on the docks and got a piece of coho salmon right out of the ocean. Then we did grocery shopping and headed home to put everything away. Ginnie is in charge of the refrigerator, making sure everything gets in it, not an easy task.
Then we went to the laundry here at the campground and got a couple of loads washed and dried and put away. So exciting!
The boys were very patient and were rewarded with a great walk to the beach and some playtime there. I went early with my chair and Watson and I played with a stick for a while then watched some crazy kids in their cars do donuts in the sand. You can drive on the beach here so walking can be
hazardous especially with the noise of the surf you can't hear a car engine. I wouldn't count on some of these drivers to be watching out for pedestrians either, they are crazy.
Watson met 2 little doxies and they played around a little til it was their time to go back. Then Ginnie and her boys came down and they walked along the ocean until some crazy driver came too close to them.
We sat outside for a while enjoying the evening when I happened to look up at the sun and saw a 22 degree halo around the sun. It is caused by sunlight passing through ice crystals in cirrus clouds. As soon as we thought about ice crystals it started getting chilly so we headed in to make our scrumptious dinner. We had fresh salmon, fresh green beans and mashed potatoes, mmmmmmm very good.
We still had some planning to do for the next few days so it's on the computer and find some campgrounds for the coming week.
