Blog 09-20-17 Fort Catslip
This morning we had a project to do then some ideas for the afternoon. Ginnie and I took off in the car to go to Astoria to the Verizon store. Ginnie had some business there so I took my phone and I pad to update all my apps because we had not had access to wifi. The service person took care of Ginnie's phone and gave me access to their wifi and I went to town. I had a book to load on my I pad and 8 updates in the apps. My phone needed 7 updates but for some reason wouldn't load, the guy said try turning it off first then back on. I am now back in business.
Then we went to Fort Clatsip about 10 min down the road. As we aproached the fort the forest got bigger and thicker. The trees were beautiful and I felt back in church again. We went to the visitor's center to find it was free today, it was the end of their fiscal year. We wouldn't have paid anything because we have the senior pass but it was nice to know they admit people free
once in a while. We saw a 1/2 hr movie on the expedition that gave information about planning and experiences encountered on the way. It was very interesting and a great introduction to the museum and the fort itself.
Walking to the fort we encountered a few more huge trees that we later learned were between 100 and 150 yrs old. We were surprised that the trees were not older but they were Sitka Spruce and they grow fast in this climate. I had been to the fort 2 yrs ago with my grandaughter Megan and it was special again to be there. It is a replica of the winter quarters of the Lewis and Clark Expedition where they spent 4 months before they headed back east. We learned today that of those 4 months they had 6 days when they saw the sun the rest were rainy, foggy and dismal. It must have been really hard to endure that long a time in the gloom.
After our visit it was time to head back to the campground which was in a different state. We drove into Oregon for the Verizon store and the fort is there too.
To get there we had to travel over a 3 mile bridge that spans the mouth of the Columbia River and is a real nail biter, for me anyway. The bridge is about 10 feet off the water for 2 miles then goes up to a very high span and is only 2 lanes wide. It has to be high enough for ocean going tankers to get under it so it felt like we were on top of the world, just a little scary.
The dogs were happy to see us and after we had a bite to eat we took the boys to the beach. It is a shorter walk than our last campground and the grass isn't so tall. The beach was beautiful with some cars on it and a few other people. Pictures.
Linus was the most excited this time and just jumped around like a puppy. We walked for a bit then sat on a big log and just enjoyed the view. Pictures.
When we got back it was supper time for the dogs and happy hour for us. We found a patch of sun and later talked to a man walking his
dog, he and his wife had come from Colorado.
The temp was 57 at that point and we were glad to come inside and enjoy the warmth.
We made arrangements to stay here another 3 days because there is so much to see and do, and they have a laundromat. So we will be here until Monday.
