Left Mt Rainer NP and headed to the ocean. It was a bummer day for us, coming out of the back country and into civilization again. We ran into a huge traffic jam in Olympia - a ten-mile backup. For the last week and a half, rush hour traffic for us consisted of seeing another car heading in the same direction as us.

Dave saw the Pacific Ocean for the first time in Wetport, WA. He was surprised at the slate color of the sand and the fine texture like talcom powder. It packs down so hard below the high water mark, that you can actually ride your bike on it with realative ease.

We traveled down the coast and came to our destination of the day, Cape Disappointment at the mouth of the Columbia River. We have seen this area on the Discovery Channel many times. It is the wildest stretch of ocean on the west coast. Hundreds of ships have been lost and thousands of sailors gone, just trying to get into the Columbia River. Now the have a jetty system that they finished in the 1930's that has made travel here safer. It's still wild but not as dangerous as it use to be.

We walked the beach near the campground which had huge pieces of driftwood. We toured North Head Lighthouse, Cape Disappointment Lighthouse, we walked out on the north jetty. We saw lots of brown pelicans, saw several sea lions and a pretty cool surfer. This is really a pretty cool place.

We had a problem with our campsite and ended up getting into a private campground for the same price. Sand Castle RV Park in Long Beach, WA has the cleanest restroom I have ever seen and Jane (the owner) is very friendly.
