Wednesday 23rd of May Another day in the Capital, my cough had been getting worst and it had stopped me sleeping well. Almost the entire room was snoring lead once again by my honourable friend. I was woken in the morning by Michael bringing me a cup of orange juice, he had gone out and bought it for me from McDonalds. This single act of kindness was a moment in our friendship I shall cherish and always remember. My throat was sore from coughing I was again hungover from a great night out but this time not so ill. This gift was the most perfect gift a friend could give at that moment, it proves it's the little things that matter most. I stayed lying in bed for a while drinking my Orange while Michael went ... read more

So the plane takes off tomorrow at 2pm-- an eleven hour flight. I am not even thinking about China right now... just fitting everything into a single suitcase and backpack. A few weeks ago a professor sent us a list of recommendations for packing. He suggests that we bring four pairs of underwear and four pairs of socks... to last us three and a half months. Right. That's going to happen. I am confused by the adapters and convertors for China's outlets. Hopefully I will be able to figure those out when I arrive. I am also worried about figuring out how to use the internet, getting a cell phone for local use, and about ten million other things mostly having to do with technology. But I worry about technology in the US, so no different ... read more

I have to say something about my expectations. Only eleven days until I leave, and I am feeling more nervous now than excited. I expect to feel lost and confused, nervous, overwhelmed and homesick. I will probably pack too much, but also forget something important. I won't have time to see everything that I want to see. It took me more than a semester to feel settled in and confident at Lewis & Clark. I will only be in Chengdu for a semester, so I will never become comfortable and I won't be able to make friends that quickly... I'll have so much classwork that I will stay in my dorm room and never come out. I'll be bit by a dog and contract rabies. These are all worst case scenarios. Best case, I excel at ... read more

There are exactly three weeks left until I am on the plane to Beijing. I'd like to say I am excited or nervous, but it still doesn't feel real. I don't think it will feel real until I start packing. My profile picture, for the moment, is a picture from the last time I visited China, which was six years ago. I remember many places and events from that trip, but they are all disconnected. Although we will be visiting many of the same sites this time around, it should be an entirely new experience. Since I visited China last, Beijing underwent various transformations in preparation for the 2008 Olympics. And I have heard that there is no longer a Starbucks in the Forbidden City. Mostly it will feel different because I am different: six years ... read more

Geo: 47.3075, -122.23We drove into Seattle this morning arriving about 9-30am. No Sleeplessness for us!! We found a park for the day for only $16 and headed along the Waterfront. It was an overcast day with a cool wind. The first attraction to take our eye was the Seattle Aquarium, which was atleast warm inside. A Wall of fish confonted us first. Around this was clustered a crowd of people watching a diver and a guide outside the tank talking about the numerous fish swimming past. During our visit to the aquarium we checked out the Tropical tanks, the Underwater dome and watched the shore birds exhibition. There they were being fed and the puffins and other birds dived and swam underwater catching the fish. We then went to the sea otters and the seals. I ... read more

Geo: 47.3075, -122.23We have had an interesting couple of days. Yesterday we drove into Vancouver and first visited the Capilano Suspension Bridge. This is one of the best examples of a suspension bridge in the world. It was originally built in 1889 and has only had minimal upgrades since then. It is now in a park which has a number of attractions. The Douglas firs are huge and the other species of plants there are abundant. It is a temperate rainforest. There is a Treetops walk and another boardwalk which hugs the cliffs. Well worth a hour or two spent. After a pleasant lunch at the small restaurant opposite the park we went into the city. We drove through Stanley Park on the end of the peninsula. This has some good beaches and is obviously the ... read more
