Well, we are going to Northern Ireland, Ireland, and Isle of Man, April 26-May 19, calling this our "Sue Retired & Mike Survived" trip. If you're receiving an email about this post, it means you're on our mailing list from past years OR I added you from our recent "Mike update" emails. If you're not interested in knowing when we post, just let me know and I'll remove your name from the list (not sure if you can do that yourself)--no offense taken; we know we all get too many emails already! If you have a better email, let me know that and I'll change it. You can always check in on your own: www.mytb.org/MikeandSue Our suitcases are mostly packed, we've notified the banks, got some local cash--of course, because of Brexit, we can no longer ... read more

Dixie Caverns Campground was the closest we could stay to Lynchburg. The grounds were pretty sketchy, but the office gift shop/antique store was fun. After a workout at Planet Fitness, we drove to the Peaks of Otter and climbed Sharp Top Mountain. If you like climbing a ladder for a couple of hours straight, you would enjoy this hike. That same day we visited old haunts in Lynchburg including our first apartment and first house. We enjoyed catching up with David Smith that night at La Villa Italian restaurant. David was in our college and career group at Timberlake Baptist.... read more

A drive northeast on Route I-81 took us next to Sugar Hollow Campground, a gorgeous heavily wooded leaf-covered city park facility. Bristol sits on the border between Virginia and Tennessee. We enjoyed the Birthplace of Country Music Museum and learned how emerging music recording technology brought mountain music to the masses. We learned that June Carter’s (Cash) parents were famous country music singers. The museum’s karaoke sound booth allowed you to make a (thankfully) temporary recording of country music songs. The next day we hiked the campground’s Ben’s and Cliff’s trails down to the picnic area and back.... read more

Thursday 15th We were staying on the outskirts of the City of Staunton (pop. 25,000) so we cunningly plotted a route to get us back the 25 miles or so to join the MABDR without going back through the city traffic. On this route we found a great well stocked country store that served us a hearty breakfast. They also had a selection of stuffed animals on display (as per the photos) that had all been shot locally. A Bear and a Coyote (we think it’s a Coyote and not a fox – corrections accepted) Leaving our breakfast stop we climbed (as usual) in the region Of Shenandoah Mountain and the Shenandoah valley. Although these were made famous by John Denver’s song “Country Road” They are also historically significant. This whole area is historic in terms ... read more

Wednesday 14th Out of Christiansburg we were immediately onto a freeway for around 20 miles to re-link with the route. Then, off the freeway onto the BDR route where we were soon into Jefferson Forest. Immediately we saw a sign to a an old covered bridge. This one was quite ordinary but very old. The Eastern States have a lot of these and some are very old and ornate. The purpose of covering the bridge was to protect the timbers from the elements. Seems a lot of work but the fact that many have lasted hundreds of years is proof it works. The trees here are, (according to Google) primarily Appalachian hardwood and mixed pine-hardwood. At this point it was a nice winding sealed road through these forests and after probably 20 miles we came to ... read more

Monday 12th: We left Blowing Rocks on a, beautiful, fine clear autumnal morning. Only a few miles out, our route took us onto a road that as usual was climbing. It was intermittently seal then gravel then back to seal. We climbed Mount Hebo on a winding sealed road with plenty of switchbacks getting to around 3800 feet. On the descent down the other side we came to Hebo the Village. Pretty small but very scenic. Soon we were back onto gravel interspersed with sealed patches as,again we climbed to nearly 4000'. Here the weather was a bit more alpine-like with misty rain and the temperature had dropped. We stopped, had some breakfast at a country store and togged up for rain. Dropping down from these heights you could say we were on our own road ... read more

Tuesday 13th We rode to the local bike shop we had found last night to see if they had any front tyres as ours were approaching there use by date. As it turned out they had in stock, four perfect fronts so we could get all bikes fitted up. The shop was shifting to a new bigger, brighter premises. The proprietor Terry gave us the address of the new premises and arranged for his Techs to fit the tyres and do an oil change. The shop is called Gearhead Junction. We were the first customers at his new shop which has a Royal Enfield franchise plus SWM and a couple of other brands. We met his staff and the Techs immediately started working on our bikes. While we were there, we told them where we stayed ... read more

Sunday 11th. We left Hot Springs and we were soon into our usual - climbing, descending then…. climbing & descending. (BTW most of these roads that climb above 3000 feet are gated as they are closed 1st January to 31st March because of snow.) We reached a point where our route directed us up a road with a road closed sign. A local advised us that we couldn’t get through due to slips caused by heavy rain. The alternative route he advised was now also closed for the same reason. He advised on an alternative to the alternative which we took. This ended up being a great gravel road through another forest (also affected by recent heavy rains but we bounced through) – this road was probably equal to our original closed TAT route. We have ... read more

There is so much interesting history here in Colonial Williamsburg. Colonial Williamsburg is a living history museum and you'll feel like you are living in the 18th century. Jamestown was the original capital of the Virginia Colony and was the first permanent English-speaking settlement in the new world founded in 1607. In 1699 it was petitioned to make Middle Plantation, later rename Williamsburg the capital in honor of King William III. Today I met Patrick Henry and George Wythe, both amazing historical figures. Patrick Henry was the first and sixth Governor of post-colonial Virginia. He is the orator of the "Give me liberty or give me death". He fought for independence from England and he opposed the US Constitution because he was afraid of a strong central government without a Bill of Rights. George Wythe was ... read more
