Blogger: Katie Location: exact same from last blog. literally. To wet your appetites while DJ is getting out of the shower, we have a long day ahead of us and we keep not waking to our alarms. Actually I don't have the alarm feature on my phone figured out yet, darn new phone, but it's pretty. ok time for me to shower, more updates from the ROAD. PS I had really weird dreams last night I think that I need to learn to meditate before sleeping to get things out of my mind.... read more

Well, tonight I'm packing for Florida. I'm off to visit my family, yay! It's been a long time since I've hopped a plane and gone down there, and I'm looking forward to being in heat and sunshine. And the intense air conditioning. It's been a busy couple of days that have left me literally sick and tired. I had an upper GI series of x-rays done, and I didn't take so well to all the barium I had to swallow. So the past two days have been spent at home with me grumpy and moaning and pale as a sheet. Don't think I want to have that done again. I'm feeling ok today, but didn't go to belly dancing lessons. I needed one more day to relax and recover. But hey, that means all the laundry's ... read more

Blogger: Katie Location: Frederick Heights, VA Well friends, today has been an interesting day. We're taking a slight change of drivers break, DJ could tell that I was itching to blog AND we had to stop because of some spills. First we realized that the box of cheese its was almost empty because it had spilled all over the front floor. I guess that was my fault. THEN. I asked DJ if he could find the sunblock in my backpack and he finds that a chocolate bar (which I'd packed from NH) had ooozed all over the inside of my bag. Basically this prompted a big sad face for me. So we pulled off at the nearest exit so I could clean up the chocolate off of all of my books, etc. It's pretty much ... read more

I feel like I should have scripted it but I hope that you like it. Sorry I didn't stick with the format during the video, I'll do better next time and I'll do my best to get DJ to do a video. :) Listening to another Kirsten mix now. Tada Miles to Bristol, VA: 242 Expected arrival time without stops: 8:33 PS: Now DJ is clapping to blistering in the sun. Sorry this fun wasn't recorded.... read more

Blogger: DJ Location: EBF So the video blog took forever to upload. We wont be trying to do that again from katie's camera because even after lowering the resolution and the FPS (frames per second) the 1 minute file was over 26 megs (not Megsys) so considering that we are uploading from a cell phone based dialup... yeah, we'll have to try something different. So Katie started off today driving about 60 miles or so, then I knocked off 100 but I am too darn sleepy to keep going. We just stopped for dinner at a place called Shoney's and got back on th road about 6:40. Hopefully I can nap while Katie drives for a bit. I don't have much to say, but I'll relay these conversational tibbits: DJ: Have you ever seen any Kevin ... read more

Honest business men are sometimes hard to find. We spent the day in Damascus going over our gear trying to lighten things up a little. CC now has a pack that fits and is about two pounds lighter, we both have lighter sleeping bags. The three man tent will be replaced with a four pound lighter two man tent. I took my pack down to the outfitters for evaluation and possible trade in on a lighter one. The owner of the place was quite friendly while he and I sat going over how I packed and what I carried. He spent about an hour with me; and in the end, he told me he could not in good faith sell me anything. What I have is about the best pack I could have, and the weight ... read more

Our Rough RouteKatie Yea I had written a ton and now it's gone, forgive me as I attempt to recreate it. Blogger: Katie Location: Bristol, VA at Courtyard by Marriot. THANK GOD. Time of arrival at destination: 9:42pm a full 18 minutes before we'd planned to be here. Go us. I did most of the driving today so I had a lot to think about. I kept a running list today of things I wanted to blog about. When driving I find that I pick out things that I think are interesting and I make some comment about them, so here goes with that. I'll be getting to that list in just a moment. In regards to DJ's previous blog, I realize that I have a limited knowledge of popculture or cultural references. You should all ... read more

Yesterday Brian and I started our road trip across the country. We left home at 12:30 pm and started the first leg of the journey to Charlottesville, VA, where I would be meeting his Pop, Aunt Geri, and Uncle Bruce for the first time. Instead of taking the straight shot, police littered HWY 29 all the way into town; we decided to follow Skyline Drive through the Shenandoah National Park. As we entered the park we were pleased to find out the park ranger, Ched, could sell us the National Park Pass we were hoping to acquire early on in the trip…however, we weren’t pleased to find out that the pass had jumped $30 in price since last year, making it $80 per pass. Fortuitously, two names are permitted on each pass, so we were ... read more

500 miles!!!!! We have just finished our 500th mile today. We walked off the next-to-last map of VA and are now on our last map! What a great day. We made it into Troutdale today to get our re-supply box a day ahead of plan. We are staying at the Baptist Church Hostel. Two hot showers in two days. Does life get much better than this? Yes we even had a banana split after supper:-) We sat at the shelter for a while this morning talking. We got a great compliment from a young man. He said we were the most compatible couple he has seen on the trail yet. He said most couples will snap at each other once in a while, but he never heard us say the slightest cross word the whole time ... read more
