Sunday: Day trip to Harpers Ferry West Virginia which is the very tip of WV and where the Shenandoah River and Potomac River combine. So you can see and be in all 3 states at once and be in all 3 within a few minutes. They are all river crossings so I suppose you could padding out into the water and do a 4 corners type thing too. Unfortunately the weather was not the best. Any by not the best I mean it down poured a half mile into our hike and we turned back... But if a place is pretty in bad weather and rain you know it's good scenery. There was still much to enjoy. Driving around for a bit during the rain showed how obscure the land is with both rivers serving as obstacles. It did finally stop raining so we walked around the downtown and were able to walk across the river into Maryland as well. My impression of WV lives up to the reputation that they have terrible teeth. The coffee shop I got lunch in had 3 workers. None of them even had half of their teeth remaining and they all looked to be in
their 30s or 40s. Quite shocking! The other reputation I knew of WV was how gorgeous it's outdoors is and if Harpers ferry is a representation of that I look forward to spending a month in WV at some point of my adventure.
Tuesday: So if you haven't noticed by now I'll say it directly- I'm posting my blog many weeks delayed. So delayed that I am onto a new state by the time by first week in a location gets posted. Sorry but it's just for safety of traveling since this is public. I say that because this Tuesday was a big news day in DC. The draft opinion from the supreme court was leaked monday night and protests were happening at the supreme court. Being just outside DC and being pro-choice meant I needed to go check it out. Not sure if it was ever very crazy during the day but by the time Copper and I arrived by the evening there were still a few hundred people there but nothing too crazy. Was great to make a my presence and stance known and it was great level of crowd socialization for copper who behaved very well
all evening.
Wednesday: Look at that delicious meal at nando's. I still can't believe a chain I loved in England is here in the DC area 😊
Thursday: One last Virginia hike at Great Falls park. This time I did a different trail and walked right along the edge before the drop down to the river. I was shocked to see someone paddle boarding in the river. That would be impressive enough but he was essentially paddle board surfing on the river. Really impressive balance because he was at it for a long time and I think he just gave up eventually- he didn't fall or anything. Saw a bunch of other people kayaking down the river and some other hikers. Didn't stay out past dark this time 😊
Friday: After the hike Thursday evening rain came in and stayed all day long. No sun and barely any breaks in the rain- just constantly coming down. Evening was spent doing laundry and packing. A fun part of this lifestyle is always laundry and clothes storage. This airbnb had a portable washing machine to hookup to the bathroom sink but no dryer. With the rain that meant I
had no way to dry my clothes. So to save $ and time at the laundromat I washed them at home, then carried the wet clothes to the laundromat and just used their dryer. ha!
Saturday: I already am not a fan of rain but I am especially not a fan when I have to be out in it. Unfortunately the rain was still going Saturday morning at which point I was forced to load up all my belongings to my car in the rain. My airbnb door was not close to where I could park either- staying in a walkout basement so I had to walk quite a bit. I did find a point where it was more drizzly than raining and just piled everything on in. I do have a lot of bags with straps to drape over shoulders and such so I can be pretty efficient in loading the car- I do it every month! The borders between Northern Virginia, Maryland and West Virginia are so odd with their rivers. I think you could draw a straight line East/West and start in Maryland, then enter Virginia, then back to Maryland, then back in Virginia, then into
West Virginia and end in Maryland again! How does that make any sense. Virginia never borders Pennsylvania but there's a section where Maryland is less than 2 miles and separates the 2 of them. It's the smallest non-vortex border to border of a US state. I think you could easily walk across it 😊
Really this week was the week of rain!
