As I was sitting at the entrance of the Blue Ridge Parkway after completing my ride, another bicyclist stopped for a chat. During the conversation I asked him where the closest food was and he informed me it was back down the mountain in Waynesboro. Since he lived close by, he offered to take me to dinner. Dan and his daughater Arin picked me up and we went down to a great restaurant in Waynesboro called “The Green Leaf Grill”. The food was really great! I got my salad fix along with some delicious French Onion Soup. Then he dropped me off at the Kroger for a few minutes so I could get a few provisions. What was going to most likely be a nutrition bar and popcorn dinner became a great meal. The bicycle community ... read more

Did the beautiful skyline drive yesterday.....Apparently the scenery was amazing (I only looked when stopped! Heights are not my thing). Lots of fun watching the double D's on their little crotch rockets. Their bikes were certainly made for these lovely twisty roads. The 2 old folks on the cruisers brought up the rear, when we could catch them!... read more

In October of 2009, Randy and I were fortunate to be able to take off for a week and a half, to travel the Blue Ridge Parkway and see the Fall foliage. We have family in Charlotte, North Carolina, and wanted to spend a couple of days with them while in their area. Prior to our planned departure, I happened to notice a particular post on the RVUSA.com forum, about a Meet & Greet that was being planned for the weekend of October 16th, 17th & 18th in Bedford, Virginia, just east of Roanoke. I posted back regarding the Meet & Greet and we were invited to join in on the fun. After some discussion Randy and I decided we could leave on the 14th of October, drive up the Blue Ridge Parkway to Bedford, spend ... read more

At least once a year my wife and I make the eight-hour drive from Connecticut down through the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia to visit my grandfather. Before he moved there, he was among the swarms of retired ex-patriot Yankees living in the Myrtle Beach area. I grew to know that area intimately, and I particularly fell in love with Charleston, which lay over an hour’s drive down Route 17. Many times I wandered those old streets, exploring back alleys and gardens, and it was one of the first places to which I took my wife when we began dating. The Shenandoah Valley is not as varied in its entertainment forms as the Myrtle Beach area, and is certainly less commercial. Its charm lies in the Blue Ridge Mountains that stand, majestic purple and often crowned in ... read more

Et følelsesladd gjensyn fant sted utenfor whitehouse hotel i Bowery st, New York 27. juni 2009.

Okay, actually we are in Lexington VA. very very cool college town. That's how I met Whistle, from London. miles on the 1st day 54 2nd day. 55 miles, and the weight was taking a toll. I still have not got into by travel backpack and I would like to ship it to anywhere but on the back of my bike. I am getting the rhythm of the bike, legs are getting sore. OD's comments: Got up early today and went to laundromat. On the way back to the room, I stopped at the office and made CC Belgin waffles for breakfast in bed. Went to Post Office, got summer bag, and mailed off winter stuff. Back in room packing food and clean cloths. Will do more later need to get done and to trail. Just a general comment before I get started on the days activities. Our web page is setup so those of you who take the time to read of our adventure can make comments. To date there have been some made, however most have been made by our extended family. I encourage everyone who reads to comment. Matt sends us those comments weekly. It is like letters from home! We are for all intents and purposes cut off from the rest of the world out here. We don't get any news when not in town and about the biggest thing we ask about when meeting a person is weather coming at us. If there is something you want to ask about or a suggestion on how to do each blog better, let me know. It makes our ... read more

OD - A new month! Been back on the trail for a week now and getting stronger every day. Had a good nights sleep with a few lightning storms in the distance as we went to sleep. Only had some strong winds go through the tree tops where we were and lots of thunder. Morning brought clear skys and sun. We managed to get everything packed in about 30 minutes, but it took almost an hour to cook breakfast, clean up the mess and hit the trail. The temp was near 65 degrees when our packs got cinched down. The Calf Mountain Hut sits at 2,700', we headed to the top then down into Beagle Gap at 2,550'. From there it was over Bear Den Mountain, 2,885' that is covered in commercial radoi antennas. There were ... read more
