The run up through Jefferson National Forest to Covington is recognized as one of the more challenging sections of the route. It is a day of continuous gravel, deep in the national forest, tracking the ridges towards the NE. Very tough if wet. The route planners have it down as one day's run. I wanted to complete it in half a day, and then do half of the following day's run, up to Williamsville VA. Getting there would put me in Highland County, and allow me to sleep in comfort and for free in our cabin just south of Monterey. So, it had to be done. The first of the classic sections is Tub Run Road, high in the mountains West of Blacksburg. Maybe 15 miles long, it is a never ending set of badly maintained ... read more

THE BASICS We visited Hot Springs on a sunny Sunday, then headed to Memphis, where we spent time at Graceland and Beale Street, and ate bbq. For a few days then, we headed east, stopping after short stretches of driving to camp overnight in small towns. Our next larger town was Roanoke, which we remembered fondly from earlier trips and enjoyed again. Now we are in the Shenandoah Valley - revisiting Roanoke, Lexington, and Staunton - and will head tomorrow toward northern Virginia so we can visit with a couple of daughters, their spouses, and four grandsons. We are definitely in the home stretch of this trip, so this will be my last entry unless we discover something wonderfully new on our well-worn route. THE FLUFF Hot Springs AR, is a nice old town. Washington DC to Staunton, Virginia An easy but busy morning. First up was a visit to Barack and Michelle's place in Pennsylvania Ave; not a bad spot they've got, probably could downsize a bit but I hear they're moving out soon anyways ?. We had managed to get a car (bike) park just a quick walk through the park to the WH which was also very handy to Starbucks so I could caffeinate ?. This taken care of we rode to the Smithsonian Institution Building ('the Castle') and got a park immediately outside; amazing! Trev went to the Air and Space Museum while I visited the Natural History Museum. We both enjoyed our respective museums but agreed you could spend a week there easily. We met in the afternoon to head south. I was waiting outside ... read more

Part II - Staunton Intro As I had mentioned in Part I - Goshen and Warm Springs, for almost twenty years, my wife and I have at various times sped past Staunton and Goshen, Virginia on our way to our annual visit to Warm Springs, VA. Recently, we purchased a LivingSocial "Staunton" Escape package from the Hummingbird Inn (see my review on url=http://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowUserReviews-g57780-d82862-r118431223-The_Hummingbird_Inn-Goshen_Virginia.html TripAdvisor ) which included two nights at the Inn with wine and cheese upon arrival, a voucher for Rockbridge Vineyard, and, in Staunton, a dinner voucher for Zynodoa, two tickets to the Bl... read more

There are some who might think we haven’t done any camping this summer or gone anywhere. Well, with high gas prices last year, that was true. But we have gotten out this year and gone places. Most were weekend trips with the Good Sam group, though we have gone elsewhere. We were supposed to be camping this weekend, but our surrogate granddaughter couldn’t get away to go camping and to the water park near Williamsburg, so we cancelled and stayed home, prepping the RV for the next big trip. In early July we joined the Good Sam So-We-Go chapter for a weekend of camping in Staunton, VA in the Shenandoah Valley. It was a Hawaiian celebration weekend and all wore Aloha shirts, leis, and our meals had a distinctive Hawaiian flavor. We took teriyaki wings and ... read more
