Morning came early on the 9th. Not sure how many other crazy history geeks were going to converge in the fields of this small Virginia hamlet, I wanted to get to the park early for the first activity of the morning. The real time Battle of Appomattox Court House demonstration was starting at 7:30 am. The weather cooperated in setting the mood with historically accurate dampness, chill and a clinging morning fog. After taking the nearly empty shuttle bus from the remote parking lot to the Historic Villiage, I wandered through the awakening Union camps of living historians. Reveille sounded, and cook fires burned. I was introduced to"bacon toast", a piece of bread fried in a skillet of bacon fat which was offered to me with the question, "Do you like bacon?" as if there could ... read more

If I had ever been on the stretches of road south of Cincinnati over to Appomattox, I can't recall it in any detail. That made each new vista, revealed around a sweeping turn or opening up below the apex of a hill, a revelation. As normally happens to me, the trip to my vacation destination seemed to pass quickly. My journey tends to be as important in finding that peace that comes with vacation as my ultimate destination is. I often use this time to car dance, catch up on a good audio book or, depending on the political talk of the day, engage in a one-sided conversation with a talk radio personality as I add to my growing list of places on a mental list titled "Places to explore when I have more time". Added ... read more

Another day of grey skies and unseasonable cool weather greeted me this morning as I made my way to the battlefield. I had been so rigidly scheduled the day before, that I hadn’t had the time to visit the visitor’s center, the book store or even to eat lunch. Not to worry, this last happens to me quite frequently while on a battlefield. By the time I register I am hungry, it is late afternoon and usually far away from life support, I decide it is easier to skip lunch altogether and just eat dinner. In this instance it was a good thing I hadn’t been hungry the previous day as the two food trucks serving as the site’s only food vendors both sold out of all of their edibles. After the surrender had been signed, ... read more

DAY 19: MAY 10, 2013 Me and my pal, Mark Thobe, joined the army on the buddy system. It meant we could be assigned to the same basic training company. We were joined at the hip though and ended up in the same squad. We went off together for advanced training at Fort Leonard Wood as heavy equipment operators. We weren’t supposed to be together anymore but we ended up in the same squad again. We were having breakfast one morning at a table with Lomax Wesley. He was a good old boy from Alabama. We sat down and started in putting milk and brown sugar in our mush. We thought it was Cream o’ Wheat. Lomax was astonished. He said, “what are you fellas doin’ to them grits. That ain’t the way you ... read more

June 1st Wednesday Appomattox Court House to Fredericksburg. Virginia Morning: Up early this morning according to plan. I will head over to the MacDonald's and then out to the Surrender site outside of town. I need to get out there and tour it before it gets too hot. It is ran by the National Park service and has a walking tour. There is a parking lot and pedestrian traffic only allowed in the park. From the parking lot to the visitor center is about 150 yards. From the McLean house , where the surrender document was signed, to the surrender triangle where the Confederates actually laid down their arms and surrendered is about 3 football fields distance which in cool weather is fine but may be a different matter at 92 degrees and 94% humidity and ... read more

Tuesday May 31 Charlotte, NC to Appomattox Court House, Virginia Today left Charlotte and headed towards Danville. I was surprised to see a Bass Pro Shop on the Northern outskirts of Charlotte! So I made a "U" turn and found my way back to it. I actually found a mosquito net there.........! So now I finally have a mosquito net to keep the little critters away. Other places have all kinds of devises you can use but they are all a racket to ensure a cash flow to the corporations that make them.....they require you to constantly buy "refills". I went next door to a Cajun Restaurant called Razoos for some gumbo. It was pretty good but not thick enough so I had the waiter bring me another "scoop" of rice and it was just right. ... read more
