Darrin emailed this picture from his cellphone. A little blurry, bit you get the idea.
Wednesday, August 29th, 2007. After a layover day in Newport, Darrin headed back to the water trail. His day started with a portage to Salem Pond to avoid three near-continuous miles of upstream whitewater. He crossed Salem and Little Salem Ponds and ended up in a set of meanders that funneled him into the Clyde River, another upstream leg of his journey.

The Clyde was shallow and swift, requiring lots of lining and pulling, plus a haul over the West Charleston Dam Portage. After the dam, Darrin put in on little Charleston Pond, and paddled to its headwaters.

His day ended early, at about 12:30 p.m., when he set camp near West Charleston and Great Falls, just before his put in on Pensioner Pond. There wasn’t going to be another campsite for over 22 miles, hence the short day. The next day’s paddle would be very long before he would rest for the night.

living vicariously w/Darrin
Darrin...I am enjoying/relishing each installment of your adventure. Also feeling a bit of jealousy as you paddle some places Manda and I know well from our time in the 80s living in Vermont. Eve's notes are particularly fun, especially the one on the healing properties of Duct Tape (we should have known...) You should begin to get some colors in just a few days, lucky duck. Paddle on!..LWD
