A very cool start to the day but the temperature will be climbing from 15 to 23 degrees between 8-10 am. It’s another sunny day and will get to 30 degrees today. We have vouchers to have free breakfast at Porters and I had an omelette and Kerry had the fruit parfait along with some fresh OJ. We later caught the Springdale town shuttle from the front of the hotel down to the Zion NP entrance. It’s Saturday today and as we walked into the NP the ranger said it was free entry (I wish they said that yesterday when we drove in !). It was a short walk from the entrance to the visitors centre where we joined the huge line to catch the canyon shuttle but the line moved fast so with around 200 ... read more

Another gorgeous start to the day and nice and warm again. We actually managed to watch a stream of the movie Broken Arrow last night on You Tube and it was interesting to see an old western movie again. The ending was a bit of a surprise but I won’t do a spoiler in case anyone wants to watch it but it did have some nice footage of the Sedona area we had traversed a few days ago before the tourists discovered the region. We missed the opportunity to see the Horseshoe Bend whilst we were in Page which is a shame but the reviews said you had to be there in the middle part of the day to get the best views and we had 2 tours back to back yesterday so it just did ... read more

Tue, 13 September – Zion and Bryce NPs Today I am an invalid. My thighs are stiff as a board. I know I only walked 10km yesterday but I reckon the 2km of continual twitching quadriceps added a virtual 8km of extra effort to my legs. At least, it feels that way. Dwayne, on the other hand, has pulled up a-ok. I guess those HIIT sessions with the millions of squats haven’t really worked for me! It started raining heavily overnight and was still going when we woke, so we took our time checking out. We couldn’t even see the mountains when we started but by the time we got to Zion the rain had abated enough to walk around. We drove through the Zion-Mt Carmel tunnel and stopped on the other side to do an ... read more

Sun, 11 September Zion National Park. There are so many and so few words that best describe this place. It's scale and beauty is epic, imposing, surreal and captivating. It's impossible to tear your glued eyes away from the scenery, which feels very much like a movie set back drop because it's so picture perfect. The narrow canyons have towering red cliffs - rugged and sometimes sheer - rising 1km above the valley floor. It reminds me of both Yosemite and Kings Canyon merged together. There are two main canyons. The first is run by a shuttle only and has the majority of the walks. Some walks are easy or moderate and some are strenuous. You catch this from the Visitor Centre and it shuttles back and forth from stops 1 to 9. The trip itself ... read more

Fri, 9 September All great stories are supposed to start with a catchy punchline or phrase but unfortunately this blog can't start that way because the first part of our trip (the flights) was very disappointing. We flew Sydney to Las Vegas via Vancouver and both flights were packed to the rafters and therefore quite noisy with people chatting during the night as well as babies that cried for 10 of the 14hr flight. Usually we grab a couple of winks but this was not the case on the Sydney - Vancouver flight. All flights were delayed an hour, although that didn't affect our connections. We then had issues with our hire car at Avis. My printed confirmation and reminder had the price as USD 604 but their computer system was showing as USD 2500. After ... read more

11th August, 2022 Alarm went off bright and early this morning so we could make the 7am pick up for the tour. We were by ourselves at the pickup point for quite a while. But less than 3 minutes from pick up time, heaps of people turned up. We had a full bus of 13 passengers plus the driver. The driver Joe told us that this was going to be a very fast paced tour and warned each one of us not to be late back to the bus anytime we stopped. First stop was Zion National Park which was quite spectacular with mountains almost right on top of you. There was a shuttle bus that goes around the park and stops at significant places and we just rode that to each stop, got off for ... read more

Here in the US, we are blessed with a multitude of great national parks. But I wonder if any of us can name a favorite. I think I have narrowed mine down to just a few, almost all in the western US. Among my favorites are Yosemite NP (here in my backyard), Bryce Canyon NP, Arches NP, Grand Canyon NP, Zion NP, and Glacier NP. Three of these are located in Utah, one of my favorite states to visit. Most of the parks I have visited are in the west, except for Everglades and Acadia. Much of what you like about a national park is what you like to do. For me, it is mostly the sights, some hiking, cycling, and most importantly, the photographic opportunities. I try not to factor in the expense or difficulty ... read more

On ne circule ... read more
