We have now traveled into our eighth state! We bid the Ruskins and Bella a fond farewell this morning, and headed back towards Golden, the only backtracking we have done on this trip. From Golden, we turned west towards home. The road over the Rockies was beautiful, with varied scenery. We saw active ski areas, impressive rock walls reaching high above us, and many mining towns. We were at over 11,000 feet at the highest pass! One of the 6% downhill grades lasted for over six miles, and there were many warning signs for truckers and many runaway truck ramps along the highway. We stopped to climb Dinosaur Hill, where an almost intact Brontosaurus was found in 1901. Elmer Samuel Riggs (1869-1963) was a paleontologist who worked for the Field Museum in Chicago. In this area, ... read more

Evidence of Native American cultures, including the Fremont, Paiute, and Ute, is common throughout the San Rafael Swell in the form of pictograph and petroglyph panels. Goblin Valley is noted for several rock art panels as well as the rock formations. The secluded Goblin Valley was then found by cowboys searching for cattle. Then in the late 1920s, Arthur Chaffin, later owner/operator of the Hite Ferry, and two companions were searching for an alternate route between Green River and Caineville. They came to a vantage point about 1 mile (1.6 km) west of Goblin Valley and were awed by what they saw – five buttes and a valley of strange goblin-shaped rock formations surrounded by a wall of eroded cliffs. In 1949 Chaffin returned to the area he called 'Mushroom Valley'. He spent several days exploring ... read more

6/25/2012 - Left Steamboat Springs on way to Flaming Gorge and stopped Dinosaur National Monument, bone quarry. Hotter than hell around 105. Left the Dinosaur Monumnet with steep grade to Flaming Gorge. The Saturn overheated and we had to stop twice to cool off the car. Arrived Cedar Springs Campground, Flaming Gorge Recreation Area. On 6/26 tourned the Dam area and arranged for next day float trip. Beautiful and clean campground but no water, electric or fires due to drought. Definetly dry camping. On 6/27 we floated the Green River. Truely an awesome trip, one of the most beautiful stretches of river yet. Had a nice shore lunch and a few rough patches of water but we are expert rafters and made it through. Also went to view the canyon and later in afternoon we went ... read more

To get to the The Salt Wash Trail take the Ruby Ranch Road 12 miles to I-70 and then drive 13 miles to Green River, for a trip of less than an hour, but that wasn’t jeeping. Instead, a few miles after the oil well I found the left turn onto Salt Wash Trail. This trail passed through colorful hills of hardened mud and sand, winding its way up and down and around the mounds. I spotted some beautiful vistas from the tops of hills, and could pick up some speed in the flats. The appearance of the land was somewhat creepy, a cross between the Badlands of South Dakota and the tailings of a strip mine, with little vegetation of any kind. It was a fascinating three hours. The Salt Wash Trail would have taken ... read more

Wow, what a cold day! On our way through the Utah parks today, we were at high altitudes, and the temperatures for most of the day were in the 40s, and windy! We started this morning by heading out of St. George and over towards Zion National Park. Along the way we came across a great overlook of the valley and got some great pictures, but it involved riding down a very bumpy, rocky dirt road. The pictures were worth it. We made it to Zion and saw some beautiful scenery, and the red rock cliffs were fantastic. There is also a really long tunnel through part of the park that was built in the 1930s into the face of the cliff that was interesting to drive through. From Zion we went on to Bryce Canyon, ... read more

We arrived July 4 in Green River in time for dinner. The drive from Ruidoso was beautiful, especially after we left Albuquerque. We drove through the Zia, Jicarilla and Navajo reservations. There was very little traffic and the total drive of 623 miles took about 10 hours. We spent the day in the native territory of the Roadrunner with lots of mesas, bluffs, and butts. Our route took us by Monument Valley, the quintessential Western backdrop but we didn't see John Wayne. ... read more

Day Four, Sunday, July 1, 2007 Woke up refreshed and ready to begin a new day of travel! The hotel offered a continental breakfast, just like at the hotel we all stayed at for Molly’s graduation, complete with waffles, but Belgian ones this time not the four little ones. Very tasty too! Came back to the room to get ready to leave and Elan lied down and promptly fell asleep! The room was too hot, for him, last night when we got in so he turned the AC on but only put it on high fan not the cooling part. One must also direct the vents to go out into the room, not up into the curtains. With the room cool enough for him he can sleep some more. Me? I’m sitting as far from the ... read more
