Yosemite - Half Dome

Nach San Francisco war der Yosemite NP eine richtige Wohltat. Es hat zwar auch hier eine Menge Leute, aber viel mehr Natur, und was fuer eine! Ich machte ein paar nette Bekanntschaften. Die Wanderung auf den Half Dome war das Highlight. Auch wenn die Wanderung nicht ganz ohne ist (10h, ca. 27km horizontal und knapp 1500m Höhendifferenz) und gerade 2 Tage vor meinem Trip jemand tödlich verunglückt ist, hat es viele Leute welche sich auch ans letzte Stück, die Cables wagen. Das sind 2 Stahlseile welche über die letzten ca. 100 m auf der steilen Granitplatte den einzigen Halt bieten. Und wenn Stau ist und man überholen will, wechselt man halt nach aussen und hat nur noch ein Seil um sich daran zu halten. Die meisten Leute fanden das zu gefährlich, mir hat es riesigen Spass gemacht . I'll be back um den Felsen mal von der steilen Seite zu bezwingen...
Die Fahrt vom Tioga Pass bis nach Mono Lake war beeindruckend. Wie schnell die Landschaft und auch das Klima ändert. Auf der Fahrt vom Mono Lake zum Death Valley hatte ich glücklicherweise einen Stöppler mitgenommmen. Er
war früher Parkranger und kennt die Nationalparks welche ich besuchen will wie seinen Hosensack. So habe ich viele Wertvolle Tips bekommen was zu tun und was zu lassen sei. Und konnte Dinge sehen, an denen ich sonst wohl einfach vorbei gefahren wäre ohne es zu merken.
Death Valley hat seinen Namen nicht umsonst. Es war ca. 42 Grad Celsius im Schatten als ich da war. Und wenn man glaubt, der Wind bringe Erfrischung: Falsch gedacht! Er fühlt sich noch heisser an wie die Luft sonst schon ist. Es hielt mich aber nicht davon ab, immer wieder aus dem klimatisierten Auto auszusteigen und die Landschaft ein wenig zu Fuss zu erkunden. Das dumme war nur, dass ich es nach mehr als 2 Monaten fertig gebracht hatte, mich aus dem Auto auszuschliessen. Dazu muss man wissen, dass die Autos hier einen Knopf für die Zentralverriegelung haben und die nicht wie bei uns mit dem Schlüssel von aussen bedient werden kann. So drückt man den Knopf vor dem Aussteigen und wenn der Schlüssel noch im Auto ist, ist es passiert. Ich glaube es gibt nicht viel üblere Orte auf der Welt wo einem das passieren kann. Zumal mir gerade das Wasser ausging
und es keinen Schatten gab. Zum Glück waren noch andere Touris da und die nahmen mich mit ins nächste Kaff. Von da aus konnte ich mit einem Parkranger zurückfahren und er konnte das Auto wieder öffnen. Schwein gehabt! Der Sonnenuntergang entschädigte mich für die Unannehmlichkeiten des Tages. Persönlicher Trinkrekord: über 6 Liter an einem Tag.
Nach viel Wüste erreichte ich Las Vegas. Kulturschock. Gigantismus wo man hinschaut. Sei es nun die bestehenden Gebäude oder diejenigen welche im Bau sind. Alles kann man haben: Piraten, künstliche Oasen, ausbrechende Vulkane, Zirkusshows jeder Art, und natürlich jede Variation von Spielautomaten. Ich versuchte mich ein wenig beim Roulette, hatte aber mehr Glück an den einarmigen Banditen. Man kann zwar leicht um Faktoren Geld gewinnen, aber auch um Faktoren verlieren. Aber mal ausprobieren muss man es ja wenn man schon hier ist.
Die Strasse aus Las Vegas hinaus führte wiederum durch was wohl - Wüste. Zion NP ist sozusagen eine Oase darin, denn es führt ein Fluss mitten durch den Hauptteil. Herrlich erfrischend kühl, besonders wenn man ihn immer wieder mal durchqueren muss um weiter vorwärts zu kommen. Ich lernte 2 Amerikaner kennen mit welchen ich am nächsten Morgen früh auf den Observation

In the description they say "... nothing for the faint hearted".
Point wanderte. Super Aussicht. Ich hängte Angels Landing auch noch an, beides keine 10min-Unternehmungen wie sonst so viele 'Wanderungen' zu Sehenswürdigkeiten hier.
Im Bryce Canyon NP verbrachte ich beinahe 3 Tage. Der Grund lag darin, dass ich am 2. Tag eine meiner Speicherkarten der Digitalkamera verlor weil ich den Reisverschluss nicht geschlossen hatte. Sprich alle Bilder seit Las Vegas, Zion NP, Red Canyon und der Beginn in Bryce Canyon waren verloren. Insgesamt lief ich den Weg 3 mal ab, um die Karte wieder zu finden. Habe sicher 30 Leute gefragt, ob sie was gesehen hätten. Keine Spur der Karte. Ich hatte die Hoffnung schon fast aufgegeben als ich vor meiner Abreise noch einmal im Visitor-Centre nachfragte, ob jemand eine Speicherkarte abgegeben hätte. Und tatsächlich, da war sie! Grooooose Erleichterung!
Den 4. Juli verbrachte ich in Boulder, ein kleines Städchen recht abgeschieden vom Rest der Welt. Am Abend fand ein kleines, aber feines Openair stadt, sehr familienfreundlich gestaltet. Leider wurde das Feuerwerk wegen der anhaltenden Trockenheit gestrichen.
Es gibt hier viele historische Kiesstrassen. Eine davon ist der Burr-Trail, welchen ich mir am Tag Darauf vor nahm. Fahrtechnisch sehr spannend und die Aussicht abwechslungsreich. Am Abend lernte ich auf dem

Campingplatz die Brüder Joe und Josh kennen. Dank ihnen konnte ich heute meine ersten Slot-Canyon-Erfahrungen sammeln. Cool!
The Yosemite NP was a real refreshment after after San Francisco. There're a lot of people, too, but much more nature, and what a kind! I met some very nice people here. The highlight was the hike to the top of half dome. Even though the hike is not an easy one (10h, about 27km loop and barely 1500m elevation gain) and someone fell to death just two dayz before I took the hike, there're shit load of people who take the adventure of the last part of the trail, the cables. This are two steel cables which lead over the last about 100m on the steep granite plate and are the only thing you can hold on to. And when the cables are jammed and you want to pass, then you simply change to either outside of the cables, but then you have only one cable to hold on. Most of the people found it too scary and dangerous, but it was a lot of fun to me . I'll be back to get to the top by climbing the

The drive from Tioga Pass to Mono Lake was impressive. How fast the landscape and the climate changes. I piked up a hitchhiker on the way from Mono Lake to Death Valley. He used to work as a Parkranger and knows all the Nationalparks like his pocket. That's how I got a lot of helpfull tips and hints what to see and do, and what is not worth to or even dangerous. And because of him I've been able to see things which I otherwise probably just drove by without noticing it.
Death Valley has it's name not for nothing. It was about 42 Degrees Celsius (102 Farenheit) the time I was there. And for those who belive that the wind might bring a refreshment: wrong thought! It feels much hotter than the still air. But it didn't prevent me from leaving the climatised vehicle and taking a closer look to the nature by foot. The bad thing about this was just that after more than 2 months I managed to lock myself out of the car. The cars here are have a knob to lock all doors, unlike in Europe, where you have to turn the

key to lock the doors. So when I usualy leave my car I push this knob and if the key is still in the car as you slam the door, it has already happend. I think there're not much worse places on the world where this can happen to you. Especially because I just run out of water and there was no shade to hide in. Luckely some other tourist gave me a lift to the next town. From there a Parkranger drove me back to my car and he was able to reopen the car. Huge relieve! The sunset payed me off for this strenous day. Personal drinking record: 6 Liter that day (about one and a half gallon).
After a lot of desert I reached Las Vegas. Culture shock. Giantism where ever you look. Either the existing buildings or the ones which are built right now. You can get everything here: Pirates, artificial Oasis, errupting volcano, circus shows of any kind, and of course every single variation of slot machines. I tried a little roulette, but had better luck on the one-armed bandits. You can easely win money by factors, but lose by factors, also. But you
have to give it a try once you're here.
The road out of Las Vegas led throu gues what - desert. Zion NP is like an oasis inside it, because a river flows in the middle of the main part. Super refreshing, especially when you cross it from time to time to make headway. I met 2 Americans and hiked to Observation Point early the next morning. Super view. I continued with Angels landing the same day. Both hikes are no 10min roundtrips like many other trails to scenic points.
I spent almost 3 days in Bryce Canyon NP. The reason was that on my second day I lost one of my memory cards of my digital camera because I didn't close the zipper tightly. Which meant that I lost all pictures since Las Vegas, Zion NP, Red Canyon and the beginning of Bryce Canyon. In total I hiked the trail three times to get the card back. I asked about 30 people to find out if they have found the card. No trace. I was about to give up hope when I went to the Visitor Centre again on the day of my departure and asked wheter
anyone has retourned a memory card. And yes, there it was! Huuuuuuge relief!
I spent the evening of the 4th of July in Boulder, a small remote town. There was a small, but nice openair concert happening, very family-friendly. Unluckely the firework didn't take place because it was too dry.
There are a lot of historic dirt roads around here. One of 'em is the Burr-trail, which I drove the next day. Very interesting to drive and varied views. In the evening I learned to know the brothers Joe and Josh in the campground Calf Creek. Thanks to them I was able to get my first slot canyon experienze today, cool!

Half Dome and El Capitan
Hi Sigi! Du willst mal von "vorne" auf den Half Dome? Ich bin dabei! Wir bräuchten einfach noch das eine oder andere Eisen sowie Bandmaterial...:-) Bis bald im Yosemite-Valley.
