We arrived here in San Marcos, TX Saturday after a long and grueling 110 mile drive from Kerrville. (SIC) We had to drive the I10 to the I35 and there were some connectors that we had to catch before getting the I35 and let me tell you what, these Texas drivers were NOT friendly drivers. My husband, who all of you know is a slow burner and very rarely says a cuss word, actually called some woman driver a B- - - - because she would not let us over to get our exit. She actually laid on the horn the whole way around us. She was NEVER in any danger of us hitting her I might add and she didn't even want that exit! She just went right around us and acted like it was ... read more

After enjoying a slow morning, Andrew, Colleen, Gene, Grandma Jackie, and I went with Zach to check out the San Marcos Fish Hatchery where he works. To be honest, I wasn't that excited to go. I thought we'd be standing around watching fish swim in tanks for hours. I was pleasantly surprised. Zach took us to see the salamanders first, and he explained to me that all the salamanders they have are endangered species. They study them and breed them (is breed the correct word to use with amphibians? I hope I'm not giving false info here). He further explained that if anything happened in the wild, like a cave collapsing, then they'd possibly have the only sample of a species left on earth. The first salamander I saw was the Texas Blind Salamander. It lives ... read more

Yesterday was quite the adventure! My brother-in-law, Zach, recommended we eat at the Cool Mint Cafe near the University of Texas in San Marcos. It was to be Oliver's first time eating at a real restaurant (we ate at Chipotle once, but only stayed about 10 minutes). Oliver did OK. He cried a bit, but with so many people in our group, we were able to alternate holding him and entertaining him so that everyone could eat. I ordered a portabello sandwich. It was OK, albeit a little too sweet for my taste. However, the cool mint salad it came with was killer. It was made with mint and olives and onion. Delicious! Andrew ordered a sweet potato enchilada and loved it, although he got heart burn from the punch of spice later. My favorite ... read more

Where else can you enjoy the history and beauty of the river and springs and transition to the high tech world of 3D? San Marcos, gateway to the Texas Hill Country offers a multitude of opportunities to venture out on lazy summer days. We had lunch at the San Marcos River Pub,http://www.riverpubandgrill.com/ . It's a local favorite offering a view of the locals and tourists splashing, rope swinging, pickin' guitar and tubing in the clear waters of Rio Vista Falls and SM River. For a change of pace we spent the next 105 min. in the amphitheatre setting at San Marcos Starplex on Wonder World Dr. to enjoy Pixar's latest 3D animated flick. Full of attention-getting special effects, with a healthy dose of life's lessons to be learned, the movie was a welcome escape from the ... read more
